A cohort of 107 men aged 51-53 years with borderline levels of blood pressure, serum cholesterol, or glucose tolerance was recruited from a general population in central Zagreb, Yugoslavia, and randomized into two groups; one was treated with drugs and the other observed in a similar fashion but not treated. Ninety-five men appeared regularly for the check-ups over a 2-year period. Levels of systolic blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose showed a substantial decrease over a period of 2 years in both treated and control groups. The possible effect of repeated check-ups and their implications are discussed.

This retrospective study evaluated the relationships between normal serum vitamin B12 and folate levels and neuropsychologic measures in a sample of 60 geriatric inpatients with psychotic depression, nonpsychotic depression, bipolar disorder, and dementia--all consecutively referred for cognitive testing. The psychotic depression subgroup demonstrated numerous significant positive correlations between B12 and cognitive subtests not seen in other diagnostic subgroups, especially those of IQ, and verbal and visual memory. Metabolic factors including vitamin B12 may play specific roles in the cognitive dysfunctions of different geropsychiatric disorders.
Emphysematous bullae may at times assume large proportions. We report a case of symptomatic giant bullae in a female which were removed surgically. The relevant literature has also been reviewed.
