Risk behaviors, self-efficacy, and AIDS prevention among adolescents.

This study was conducted to investigate risk behaviors and AIDS-preventive variables in high school adolescents. One hundred fifty-two students in Grades 10 through 12 were administered an AIDS-related behavior questionnaire and the Attitudes Toward AIDS Scale-High School Version (ATAS-HS; Goh, 1992). The results indicated that use of alcohol was far more common than other risk behaviors among the respondents. Rates of sexual intercourse and intravenous drug use were significantly lower than those reported in other research. Self-efficacy was significantly related to AIDS-preventive behavioral intentions, perceived knowledge, and measured knowledge about AIDS. Because the AIDS-preventive variables functioned differently in their relationships to sexual practices, the correlations suggest a pattern of co-occurrence between specific behavior intentions and actual AIDS-preventive behaviors (i.e., sexual experience, use of condoms). In addition, significant gender and grade differences were found on selected risk behaviors and AIDS-preventive variables.

Effects of HIV/AIDS information on attitudes toward AIDS: a cross-ethnic comparison of college students.

College students (N = 274) from five ethnic groups were administered an AIDS information questionnaire and the Attitudes Toward AIDS Scale (ATAS; Goh, in press) to determine the effects of AIDS information on attitudes toward AIDS. A series of chi-squares and multivariate analyses of variance indicated significant differences among ethnic groups on the usage of HIV/AIDS information, the self-reported degree of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, measured knowledge about HIV/AIDS, and HIV/AIDS-related attitudes. Besides ethnicity, access to HIV/AIDS information and self-reported degree of knowledge about AIDS had significant effects on a person's measured knowledge of and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS.

Another look at the aptitude-achievement distinction.

48 high school students were administered the Arithmetic subtest of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Revised, the Mathematics subtest of the Peabody Individual Achievement Test--Revised, and the Stanford Diagnostic Mathematics Test. Correlations, of about .80 among the three tests, were interpreted as supporting a part of the continuum theory of Humphreys, Anastasi, and Cronbach for conceptualizing the distinction between aptitude and achievement tests.

Factor analysis of the PIC profiles of clinic-referred children.

The PIC profiles of 175 children over a wide age range were factor analyzed in order to determine the underlying personality dimensions measured by the instrument. The subjects were referred to an interdisciplinary university clinic for a variety of learning, cognitive, and emotional problems. A principal components analysis with oblique rotation yielded three major factors: Internalized Personality Disturbance, Cognitive Development, and Externalized Behavior Disorder. A small fourth factor that involved mainly the Somatic Concern scale was revealed also. Implications of the factors for the interpretation and clinical use of the PIC profiles are discussed.

PIC profiles for learning-disabled and behavior-disordered children.

Compared the performance of learning-disabled and behavior-disordered children (N = 60) on the recently published Personality Inventory of Children (PIC) to investigate the discriminant validity of the instrument. The data were analyzed by profile analysis and stepwise discriminant analysis. Results showed that learning-disabled and behavior-disordered children could be differentiated clearly on subtests that comprise the Cognitive Development and Conduct Disorder factors. However, less differentiation was found on the Internalization factor. Further examination indicated a possible diagnosis X scale "interaction" within the Internalization factor. Those learning-disabled children who also experienced "internal" difficulties tended to score high on the Somatic Concern Scale, while behavior-disordered children typically scored high on the other Internalization scales (i.e., Anxiety, Withdrawal, etc.). A total of seven of the PIC clinical and validity scales were selected in the discriminant function that separated the two groups.

Relationships between McCarthy Scales of children's abilities and teachers' ratings of school achievement.

This study investigated how well the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities correlated with teachers' ratings of children's academic achievement. The McCarthy Scales are useful in predicting school achievement of normal children, but more research is needed with learning disabled students. The use of teachers' rating scale with children of low functioning was discussed in light of the recent Larry P. decision.

American and British data on a three dimensional assessment of personality in college students.

Reported data on American and British college student samples for the new Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism (PEN) Inventory. Descriptive statistics for PEN dimensions for five American female samples (total 492 subjects), five American male samples (total 399 subjects), one British female sample (700 subjects) and one British male sample (700 subjects) were summarized. Intercorrelations of PEN dimensions for most of the American samples were reported. The pattern of significant intercorrelations tended to be in accord with previous work on prior related inventories. Similarities and differences among the sample descriptive statistics were discussed.
