Primary prosthetic replacement has become the method of treatment for acute subcapital fractures of the femur and is now widely accepted as a treatment for elderly patients. This paper presents the incidence of acetabular erosion by Monk (hard top) hip prostheses for subcapital fractures as compared with that by Austin Moore prostheses.
Two cases of isolated paralysis of the nerve to flexor pollicis longus are described, both of which recovered after division of constricting fibrous bands. Anatomical considerations and treatment are described.
Between 1974 and 1983, 187 total knee replacements were performed in 163 patients at four East Kent district general hospitals. With few exceptions pain was the most common indication for the operation and it produced complete or almost complete relief in 90% of cases. The most frequently used prostheses were the Attenborough, Stanmore and Geomedic.
To compare the collagen structure of the shoulder joint with that of other joints, the collagen of shoulder, elbow, and hip joints was examined electron microscopically, electrophoretically, and by its response to mechanical stress. Collagen Types I, III, and V were common to joint capsules. Electron microscopy of shoulder and elbow joint capsules did not identify any structural difference. When subjected to a mechanical force, the shoulder joint showed a greater capacity to stretch than the elbow joint, and greater force was required to break the shoulder joint than the elbow joint.
Seven patients with stress fractures of the femoral neck were treated at the Military Hospital of Thessaloniki, Greece between 1972 and 1976. Their average age was 22 years. Stress fractures of the femoral neck are not as common as stress fractures of the metatarsals or tibia and other bones. Intense muscular activity was the main cause of these stress fractures which were only classed as such in the absence of any injury. Pain and stiffness around the hip were reported by all seven patients before admission. Results of laboratory investigations of the patients' alkaline phosphatase and serum calcium levels were normal. One patient received surgical treatment and the other patients were treated conservatively. Healing was uneventful in all.
