Infants' visual preferences in the presence and absence of auditory stimulation.

Two experiments were conducted to explore the hypothesis that altering rate of change of an auditory stimulus will affect infants' fixation of changing visual stimuli. Experiment 1 revealed that average percent time that infants preferred looking at the less stimulating of two meaningless visual displays was highest under conditions of auditory stimulation. Experiment 2 demonstrated a significant inverse linear relation between rate of change of loudness in auditory stimulation and attentiveness to rapidly changing visual stimulation, due largely to decreased looking at the most stimulating display under conditions of auditory stimulation. In addition, the heart rates of a significant number of subjects were found to be accelerated in the presence of auditory stimulation. The results are interpreted as indicating that this type of sensory interaction is mediated, at least in part, by a subject's level of arousal.

Does occupational stereotyping still exist?

We surveyed 113 college students regarding their views of certain occupational stereotypes. Our results indicated that in this population gender was related to the subjects' views of occupations as either male, female, or neutral, and that the father's primary occupation significantly affected the subjects' views of only one occupation--clinical sociologist. The mother's occupational seemed to have no effect.

A competency-based training program in early intervention.

This paper describes a federally funded training program developed to prepare entry-level occupational therapists to deliver early intervention services. The program had two phases. Phase I was designed to provide occupational therapy supervisors with advanced skills for supervising and teaching the students about the provision of early intervention services. These skills were specific supervisory strategies and learning techniques designed to facilitate optimal communication between the student, the supervisor, and the academic faculty members, as well as to facilitate consistency of information between workshops and practices in the clinic. Phase II involved a 12-week clinical fieldwork experience for the students in an early intervention program combined with didactic programs at the university. Both supervisors and students provided feed-back on the program. Supervisors reported that the training strengthened their supervisory skills and techniques. Students reported that the training helped them to clarify the role of occupational therapy in early intervention and that they had developed skills critical to providing family-centered early intervention. These skills included both providing direct treatment to children and working in partnership with families and caregivers.

Analysis of flue-cured tobacco essential oil by hyphenated analytical techniques.

The major components of an alkaloid-free, flue-cured, tobacco essential oil sample are isolated and identified. This is accomplished by utilizing modern hyphenated analytical methods. The instrumentation developed to accomplish this are an automated multidimensional gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer/flame ionization detector (MDGC/MS/FID) and a multidimensional gas chromatograph/matrix isolation/Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (MDGC/MI/FTIR). A total of 306 compounds is identified in the essential oil, of which 80 are found as tobacco constituents for the first time.

The direct measurement of cytochrome P450 in unfixed tissue sections.

A method for the measurement of cytochrome P-450 in unfixed cryostat sections is described. The sections are incubated for 10 minutes at room temperature in a buffered solution containing polyvinyl alcohol and sodium dithionite. Two incubations are performed on serial sections, one in nitrogen and the other in carbon monoxide. Readings are taken on a Vickers M85 microdensitometer fitted with a high sensitivity photomultiplier amplifier system, the measurements being made on corresponding fields in the serial sections. Subtraction of the nitrogen values from the carbon monoxide values, after allowing for an absorption shift, gives the absolute spectrum of cytochrome P450. The subtraction corrects for the tissue content of other haem-containing proteins. The cytochrome P450 spectrum shows a sharp maximum at 450 nm, and two other minor components absorbing at 444 nm and 458 nm. The content of cytochrome P450 in animals fed with phenobarbitone was 2.4 times greater than in control animals.
