Corneal elastosis within lattice dystrophy lesions.

Corneal buttons of two patients with lattice corneal dystrophy were studied by light and electron microscopy. They showed elastotic degeneration within the amyloid deposits. The amyloid deposits displayed characteristic staining; the elastotic material (elastin) within the deposits stained positive with Verhoeff-van Gieson and Movat pentachrome stains and showed autofluorescence. The characteristic ultrastructural findings of amyloid and elastotic material were also demonstrated. The possibility of the associations of these two materials in the cornea is discussed.

Paravenous pigmentary retinochoroidal atrophy.

Three cases with ophthalmoscopic findings of paravenous pigmentary retinochoroidal atrophy are described. One case had markedly abnormal electrophysiologic studies suggestive of a hereditary chorioretinal degeneration. The other two cases did not. Similarly conflicting results are found in the literature. Because of the great similarity in clinical appearance we none the less feel that all of these cases represent a distinct hereditary disease entity and are not acquired.

Electroretinography and retinitis pigmentosa. No discrimination between genetic subtypes.

Electroretinography (ERG) has been utilized to claim that the various hereditary subtypes of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) could be distinguished according to the temporal characteristics of the b wave. This study compares two different ERG techniques, one utilizing constant amplitude response and the other balanced photopic and scotopic stimuli, for the early diagnosis of RP. Both methods were found to be reliable objective tests for diagnosing RP. Neither test could differentiate between dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked RP.
