The mean level of serum IgE in Nigerian blood donors is significantly higher than those in expatriates living in Nigeria and in Swiss blood donors. The examination of serum IgE levels (by the radioactive single radial diffusion technique) in Nigerian patients with different diseases, in asthmatic children with matched controls in Ghana, and in subjects from malarious and non-malarious areas of Tanzania indicates that high IgE levels in Africans may not be due to malaria, vesical schistosomiasis, or onchocerciasis infections. A marked difference, however, was found between African subjects with positive and negative findings of stool parasites; they had higher and lower mean levels of serum IgE, respectively. It seems that, in an African population where the serum IgE levels are raised for other reasons, a rise in IgE in association with allergic conditions such as asthma may not be apparent.
Following a collaborative assay by five laboratories in four countries, an International Reference Preparation for Human Serum Immunoglobulin E has been established by the World Health Organization and international units have been assigned to it.
The immunoglobulin levels in sera from mothers and newborn infants were studied in Gambian, Nigerian, and Swiss populations. The maternal levels of IgG and IgM, but not IgA, varied with locality. As they were highest in Gambian and lowest in Swiss women, they may have reflected differences in the endemicity of infectious diseases in the different environments. The neonatal Ig levels showed less variation than the maternal. Neither maternal nor neonatal levels of IgG showed any consistent relationship with birthweight; however, when maternal IgG levels were low the neonatal levels tended to exceed them. The mean IgG and IgM levels were higher in Gambian than in Nigerian or Swiss infants; the higher IgM values may have been due to more frequent antigenic stimulation in utero in the Gambian group. Evidence of placental malaria, mainly falciparum, was found in 76 of 234 Gambian women. No parasites were found in the blood from any neonate. The maternal levels of IgG, but not of IgM or IgA, were significantly elevated in association with placental malaria. The neonatal immunoglobulin levels were not influenced by placental malaria and no evidence was found to indicate that malaria infection of the placenta induced an immune response in the fetus.

An International Reference Preparation for Human Serum Immunoglobulins G, A, and M has been established by the World Health Organization and international units have been assigned to it. This paper describes international collaborative assays carried out by 10 specialized laboratories, which attempted to define the immunoglobulin contents of the International Reference Preparation by weight. For all immunoglobulins the estimates of contents by weight were imprecise, largely owing to heterogeneity of estimates between laboratories. Mean estimates of immunoglobulin contents by weight are given, but it is considered that the results of assays of immunoglobulin against the International Reference Preparation or related preparations are more precisely expressed in terms of international units.
