Saline or BSA were instilled 2, 5, 8 or 11 times at daily intervals into the parotid glands of rats, via Stensen's duct. Hydropic change of the acinar cells developed after 8 and 11 instillations. Histologically, the lesion was characterized by enlargement of the acinar cells, the cytoplasm of which contained vacuoles displacing the nuclei. In view of the negative results of various histochemical reactions the vacuolization was interpreted as hydropic in nature.

Experimental amyloidosis was induced in mice with repeated injections of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) reinforced with bacterial vaccine. BAPN administered in a mixture with CFA or on its own before the injection of CFA reduced the incidence of amyloidosis. The reduction in the incidence of amyloidosis following the administration of BAPN may be due to its inhibitory effect on the oxidative deamination of amino acids, which presumably inhibit cross-linking of amyloid fibrils or interfere with metabolic pathways which involve the formations of mucopolysaccharide formation. It is suggested that the defective formation of the mucopolysaccharide-amyloid protein complex inhibits amyloid deposition and induces the activity of beta glucuronidase observed in the present study. The reduced incidence of amyloidosis following BAPN adminsitration cannot be due to lysosomal enzyme degradation of the amyloid as the activity of cathepsin D and acid phosphatase is decreased during this process.

This investigation assessed the syndromal nature of menstrual cycle changes in women who experience significant cyclicity of mood by exploring the time course of different symptoms in relation to endocrinologically defined segments of the menstrual cycle. Participants were accepted into the protocol on the basis of a prospectively documented history of perimenstrual mood change. The protocol included completion of the Daily Life Experiences Questionnaire and blood sampling during three menstrual cycles. The syndromal nature of menstrual cycle changes was explored by determining the types of symptoms which fluctuated in relation to five endocrinologically defined segments of the menstrual cycle, and the time course of the symptom changes. The results further document the temporal association between the luteal phase and the onset of perimenstrual symptoms and suggest that the syndromal nature of menstrual cycle-related changes may differ for women who experience different intensities of cyclical mood.
This article provides an overview of the literature on the role of estrogen and progesterone in modulating mood in women. The evidence that severe PMS is causally related to an ovarian hormone disorder is assessed. The influence of endogenous levels of estrogen and progesterone and of exogenously administered ovarian hormones on mood is evaluated.
