This 1-year retrospective study was conducted on a regional secure unit at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, London, using the hospital's data collection sheet for violent incidents. The majority of incidents were minor in nature but there were a few assaults that involved pain, lacerations or bruising. Although violence was common to the majority of patients, two contributed a large number. Those staff at the bottom of the nursing hierachy who spent most time with patients were most at risk. Likewise fellow patients were also often involved in incidents. Violence did not tail off after the breakfast period, as reported in previous studies, but continued to rise until bedtime.

Antrafenine is a new non-narcotic analgesic. In a double-blind, cross-over study the efficacy of antrafenine at doses of 450 mg/day and 900 mg/day was compared to naproxen 750 mg/day and placebo in patients with osteoarthritis. Each drug treatment was given for two weeks, the total duration of the study being eight consecutive weeks. Antrafenine, at either dose, was effective in relieving pain associated with osteoarthritis; the efficacy was comparable to naproxen. There was no definite indication that 900 mg/day was more effective than 450 mg/day. Antrafenine, at both dosage levels, was well tolerated. Any noted side-effects were mild. There was a total of 12 side-effects in nine patients with the high dose, five side-effects in five patients with the low dose, compared with 11 side-effects in nine patients with naproxen and 10 side-effects in seven patients with placebo.
Antrafenine, a new non-narcotic analgesic, has been compared at a dose of 600 mg/day to naproxen 500 mg/day and placebo in a double blind three way cross-over study on 36 patients with osteoarthrosis of the hip and/or knee. There was significant improvement with both active drugs. There was no significant difference between the two active drugs. Patients' preference at the end of the study was antrafenine 7, naproxen 10, placebo 2, no preference 9.3 patients withdrew because of concomitant illness; 2 patients withdrew because of lack of efficacy in the placebo period; 3 patients failed to attend clinic. Antrafenine is more efficacious than placebo in the treatment of osteoarthrosis of the hip and/or knee, and at the doses tested, is of comparable potency to naproxen.
A high-pressure liquid chromatographic procedure for the determination of sulfamethazine residues in beef tissues is presented. Tissue samples are extracted and analyzed utilizing normal-phase chromatography and a UV detector at 254 nm. Primary and confirmatory identification and quantitative determination are provided at the tolerance limit of 0.1 ppm of sulfamethazine in tissues. Recoveries obtained from liver, fat, kidney, and muscle tissues were 69, 82, 77, and 76%, respectively, when spiked at the tolerance limit.
Students in the health professions are working with a variety of anxiety-provoking patients, such as victims of child abuse or sexual assault, suicidal and terminally ill patients. Faculty have a responsibility to assist these students in maximizing the growth potential of the experience. This study, involving 22 female and three male students at the University of New Mexico Colleges of Nursing and Medicine, examines the effects of such an experience. Each participant worked on a Sexual Assault Response Team at the Bernalillo County Medical Center for an average of 8.6 months; each saw an average of 16 rape victims for whom they provided counseling services and assisted in medical care and gathering evidence. All of the students reported heightened awareness of their own vulnerability. They began to develop cognitive and behavioral strategies to cope with the possibility of being raped. Approximately one third of the subjects developed symptoms similar to those experienced by rape victims. Those who did not develop symptoms attributed it to being able to work through their feelings at team meetings. Students became more aware of their attitudes toward rape victims, both positive and negative. Moreover, the most significant change they experienced was in their own perception of themselves as care givers; they felt more confident and competent, both in medical and counseling areas. Faculty are encouraged to meet weekly with students involved in such experiences.
The release of 3H 5-HT from murine mast cells is shown to be a simple reproducible method for studying the activation of such cells by various agents. 3H-serotonin was taken up by peritoneal cell suspensions in vitro and was released by antigen, Concanavalin A, Forssman antiserum, anti-mouse immunoglobulin, or a polypeptide antibiotic, Cinnamycin.
