A reliable method of securing suction drain tubing is presented. It ensures that the tubing lies flat on the skin and runs in the direction the surgeon wishes. The method uses an adhesive tape (Elastoplast) 'flag' on the tubing.
A postal audit of the main surgical variables in third molar exodontia under general anaesthesia was undertaken on consultants holding a National Health contract within the British Isles. This first paper presents the results. A response rate of 175 returned questionnaires from the 247 consultants was obtained (70.9%). Analysis revealed that the majority of consultants use antibiotics, mouthwashes, sutures, analgesics and postoperative review and the minority steroids and peroperative local anaesthetic, routinely in the majority of cases. Approximately half routinely use a chisel as opposed to a bur for bone removal. The consultants who gave all their patients steroids were significantly (p less than 0.01) more likely to possess a medical qualification than the consultants who did not.
A method for draping in TMJ surgery including arthroscopy is presented using a urological drape. The advantage is that it allows movement of the mandible by the surgeon or assistant without their contamination by saliva.
A method for the immediate correction of the defect created at the donor site of the temporalis muscle flap is described. It uses a performed acrylic prosthesis. A case is presented in which the prosthesis could have been used to good effect, and two cases are reported to show the successful use of this technique.
The use of the pectoralis major muscle only flap in conjunction with a free iliac crest bone graft for reconstruction of the mandible is described. These flaps were raised in 20 cadavers and found to be of consistently adequate length to be used as described.
