Family interaction in the home. Development of a new coding system.

The Home Interaction Scoring System (HISS) is a recently developed observational coding system allowing for the systematic description of naturalistic family interaction. After discussing the importance of naturalistic observation procedures, we present a brief review of several coding systems that have been developed for this purpose. Based on our evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of these systems, our rationale for developing a new system is presented, followed by a detailed discussion of the current status of the HISS. In a final section, we discuss a number of in-progress and planned analyses of the HISS relevant to the instrument's value in the assessment of family process.

Planning law deadlines threaten state programs.

By the end of June 1979, many states must have certification-of-need programs in compliance with federal regulations or lose federal funding for them. By the end of September 1980, states must be in compliance or lose federal funding for all state health resource development programs. Because these steps appear to be too politically severe for HEW to implement, Congress will have to take steps in the 96th Congress to modify the impact of these deadlines.

Lactate dehydrogenase X: effects of antibody on mouse gametes but not on early development.

A rabbit antiserum specific for LDH-X, the spermatozoal form of mouse lactate dehydrogenase, was prepared. This antiserum had no effect on fertility of female mice when injected before or after insemination. Similarly, there was no toxicity to the embryo when high concentrations of the antiserum were added to cultures of 2-cell and 8- to 16-cell embryos. There was, however, a moderate inhibitory effect on fertilization in vitro, which may be attributable to a direct action of antiserum to LDH-X on sperm.
