[Which equipment for proton therapy of the future?].

The success of proton therapy depends on its cost. Hospital based equipment in fabrication for the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston costs in the excess of 17 millions dollars, the accelerator being only a fraction of the cost. We think that price can be significantly decreased. We review the different new ways of accelerating protons currently under study in France in order to build a smaller, less expensive but reliable treatment device.

Absorbed dose distribution for X-ray beams and beams of electrons from the Therac 10 Neptune linear accelerator.

After a brief presentation of the Therac 10 Neptune linear accelerator a complete set of dose distribution numerical values is given. These values define the depths on the axis as a function of the depth dose and define the penumbra (as characterized by the positions of the isodose curve intersections with parallel planes to the phantom surface) for beams of X-rays and for beams of electrons. Measurements of residual X-rays are given for a 10 MeV beam of electrons.

Comparison between experimental measurements and calculated transport simulation for electron dose distributions inside homogeneous phantoms.

Comparison is made between dosimetric results measured on electron beams delivered by the three medical accelerators Sagittaire, Saturne and Neptune built by CGR MeV with the results simulated by a Monte Carlo method. In depth, the differences are small for moderate energies with scanned electron beams. In the penumbra region, the differences are small in all cases.

Absorbed dose distributions for electron beams from the sagittaire. Systematic measurements and their representation for introduction into a computer.

The principle of representation used consists of a description of the differences between actual dose distributions and ideal dose distributions. This description is based on relations linked to known discrete geometrical and physical quantities. The use of this principle is demonstrated for electron beams delivered by the CGR MeV Sagittaire linear accelerator: a systematic analysis of the results of the measurements leads to two methods based on elementary mathematics: the first uses successively two relations describing the isodose curves, and the second computes the dose for each point defined by its coordinates.

Absorbed dose distributions for X-ray beams and beams of electrons from the Therac 20 Saturne linear accelerator.

After a brief description of the Therac 20 Saturne linear accelerator a complete set of absorbed-dose distribution values is given. These values define the depths on the axis as a function of the depth dose and define the penumbra (as characterized by the positions of the intersections of the isodose curves with planes parallel to the phantom surface) for beams of X-rays and for beams of electrons. Tissue-maximum ratios are given for beams of X-rays. Analytical values for the electron depth dose curve are compared with the values obtained on the Sagittaire linear accelerator.
