[Structural changes in the collagen fibers of the connective tissue in chronic inflammation in the periodontium].

Data of examinations of the periodontium during chronic inflammations are analyzed. Immunohistochemical studies revealed that the connective-tissue cicatrix forming in the course of reparative regeneration of the periodontium is immature and incapable of performing mechanical functions. The authors suggest that the above regeneration abnormalities lead to a relapsing occlusion injury of the periodontium and progress of the inflammatory sclerotic process. Perspective trends of the patho- and morphogenetic research of chronic periodontitis are outlined, as are the probable theoretical approaches to development of methods for correction of such abnormalities.

[The epidemiological characteristics of fatal subdural hematomas in forensic medical practice].

A retrospective analysis of subdural hematomas is carried out: 493 in subjects dead from mechanical injuries (from files of forensic medical morgues in Tver', 1992-1994), and 37 cases with chronic subdural hematomas (from files of forensic medical morgues No. 2 and 6 in Moscow, 1995-1997). Age and sex of victims, time and circumstances of injuries, topographic and morphological features of subdural hemorrhages and their relation to concomitant injuries, and presence of ethyl alcohol in the organism are studied. The data on chronic subdural hematomas are presented. The authors emphasize the need in forensic medical studies of this condition.

[Method for estimating index of coronary arteries patency].

The authors present an original method for evaluating the index of coronary artery patency by perfusion technology. The method is simple, requires no expensive equipment, and effectively diagnoses stenotic processes in coronary arteries. It was tried in cases of sudden cardiac death. The method is intended for forensic medical expert evaluations and for pathology studies.

[Diagnosis of lethal poisoning with some substances used by toxicomaniacs].

The authors analyze 62 expert conclusions on deaths from acute and chronic poisoning with various toxic substances used by toxicomaniacs. Forensic medical examination of corpses and forensic chemical analysis identified drugs, toluene, freon, organophosphorus compounds, and other toxins.

[Morphometric approaches to diagnosing the time of death].

A new method has been used to evaluate the time of death. The relationship between the degree of autolysis of cadaveric viscera and time of death has been studied by histomorphometrical methods. The study was carried out on histological preparations of the lungs, heart, liver, spleen, and kidneys from 20 corpses of humans dead from craniocerebral injuries. Based on the results, tables were created for evaluating the time of death even at remote periods after death, when the results of other methods are unreliable.

[Epidemiologic analysis of ephedrone substance abuse in the Primorye territory].

Biochemical effects of ephedrone and their clinical manifestations are described. Statistical data on the prevalence of ephedrone narcomania in the Primorye territory are compared with the prevalence of use of psychostimulating narcotics in other regions (analysis of the files of thanatological department of Bureau of Forensic Medical Expert Evaluations in Moscow). Morphological changes in the viscera are described detail. The authors come to a conclusion on high incidence and multifactorial toxic effects of ephedrone and multilevel somatic involvement in ephedrone narcomania.

[Status and prospects in developing morphologic studies in forensic medicine].

Modern state of forensic medical morphological studies is analyzed. Main trends of research are reviewed (personality identification, diagnosis of acute alcohol and narcotic poisoning, morphology of craniocerebral injury, development of criteria for identifying the time when injuries were inflicted). Shortcomings in these studies and in practical forensic medical histological service are discussed. Prospects for further studies are outlined.

[Morphometry of cerebral neuroglial complexes in forensic medical diagnosis of substance abuse].

A method of morphometric evaluation of neuroglial complexes of the brain by relatively simple and available morphometric technique is described. The gist of the method is measuring the glial distance and glial density, which change during narcotic intoxication and abstinence. The method is addressed to forensic medical expert histologists engaged in microscopic diagnosis of such poisonings on section material.

[Role of alcoholization in pathogenesis of morphological changes in substance abusers].

Morphological manifestations of combined intoxication with ethanol and narcotics are described. Special attention is paid to changes in the liver which were studied both qualitatively and quantitatively. Specific features in the pathological processes concomitant with combined intoxication are described; high incidence and expression of morphological markers of alcoholism in subjects abusing both ethanol and narcotics in comparison with "pure" alcoholics were determined. These features can be used in forensic medical and pathological (autopsy) diagnosis of chronic narcotic intoxication and its combination with alcoholism.

[Morphological study of the corpus striatum in forensic medical diagnosis of chronic opiate abuse].

Morphological analysis of the corpus striatum in morphine intoxication was carried out on experimental and autopsy specimens. The resultant morphometrical data characterize various stages of opium narcomania and abstinence. The severity of involvement of neuronal structures and specific features of the glial reaction are described, which can be used in forensic medical diagnosis of such intoxications.

[Forensic-medical evaluation of the histologic structure of the hymen].

Variants of microscopic structure of the hymen are described and its histological classification based on the stromal component structure is offered. Hypotheses on the hymen histogenesis under different conditions are formulated. Histological analysis and histological classification of the hymen are needed for objective solution of questions arising during expert evaluation of virginity and its violation, probability or improbability of coitus without defloration.

[Morphological changes of internal organs in opium addiction].

Morphological manifestations of chronic opium addiction are presented. Specific features of pathological processes in drug abusers may facilitate forensic medical and postmortem diagnosis of narcotic drug poisoning or other death causes in chronic narcotic intoxication.
