[Use of Varitect in the prevention of diseases in children caused by varicella-zoster viruses].

The authors report on prophylaxis experience with specific human varicella-zoster immunoglobulin for intravenous use Varitect (produced by Biotest) in two children within incubation period of varicella. One patient was a newborn child whose mother had acquired varicella three days before the delivery and Varitect was administered immediately there after. The other patient had acute lymphoblastic leukemia; it was administered Varitect on the fifth day of incubation period. In the first patient the disease did not appear at all, in the second patient the course of disease had been mitigated and without complications within the extended incubation period.

[Side effects of administration of gamma globulin preparations in patients with primary agammaglobulinemia].

Eight patients with adverse reactions were observed in a group of 20 primary agammaglobulinaemic patients treated with gammaglobulin derivatives. In four cases only sporadic reactions were observed, but in 2 cases repeated reactions made gammaglobulin therapy impossible. In the remaining two patients a change of gammaglobulin derivatives made adequate therapy possible. Possible causes of adverse reactions during gammaglobulin treatment and their prevention are discussed.

Immunorestoration in children with recurrent respiratory infections treated with isoprinosine.

In 27 children, 4-8 years old, with recurrent respiratory infections of the upper and lower respiratory tracts Isoprinosine (ISO) tablets were administered for 7-10 days at daily doses of 50-100 mg/kg. Clinical signs of acute respiratory disease, including temperature abnormalities and subjective complaints, subsided in a short time and the children showed no symptoms for periods ranging from several weeks to several months following the therapy. The children were selected for immunotherapy with ISO on the basis of their low levels of E-rosette forming cells in peripheral blood. Several immune function parameters assessed immediately after treatment with ISO and compared with those obtained before illness and ISO administration. Low levels of T-lymphocytes returned to normal after ISO therapy, B-lymphocyte relative and absolute numbers, however, were not affected by the treatment. Nor were any changes due to ISO found in immunoglobulins, complement components, beta 2-microglobulin and C-reactive protein. Moreover, ISO had no stimulative effect on spontaneous tetrazolium reductase activity of granulocytes but it showed a slight inhibition of their phagocytosis-associated metabolic activity.

The development of three major immunoglobulin serum levels in healthy children between 2 and 16 years of age with regard to sex.

The levels of three major immunoglobulins were followed in the sera of 447 healthy children in order to explore age and sex-dependent differences; the childhood period from 2 to 16 years was graduated t 1 year intervals. The geometric means and 95% confidence limits were assessed on log-transformed data. A significant sex-related distribution and higher values in girls were shown for IgM class through the whole age period under study. IgG attained levels of adult subjects by about year 8, i.e. in children between and 8 years old, IgM by about year 5 and IgA did not reach adult levels until year 16. At the age of 11 years a transient significant decline of IgM could be observed in the boys. The regression analysis on individual immunoglobulin with age in months were performed separately for boys and girls. All the three major immunoglobulin values showed a linear positive correlation with age. Using regression analysis, sex related differences could be confirmed mainly for the IgM class.
