This study of deans of graduate programmes in nursing found that two-thirds of them had discretionary funds and 'seed' money for faculty scholarly endeavours. Both 'seed' money and 'release' time were associated with faculty productivity. A small number reported that they could carry 'hard' dollars across fiscal years. Differences among institutions by the nine Carnegie categories were found.

Prospective payment has created a desire for improved internal operating efficiency by nurse executives and hospital administrators. Identifying nursing costs is one step in obtaining those efficiencies. Improved nursing cost allocation methods have been developed but these systems are costly to implement. Finding a low cost alternative to such systems would be valuable. The authors present direct comparisons of conventional daily and acuity based nursing labor costs allocation systems. Consistent with the findings of others, they demonstrate substantial differences between these methods. There is a high correlation of nursing labor costs with the patient's ancillary costs. However, the correlation is not sufficiently strong to use as a proxy for nursing costs. Consequently, nurse executives should strive to implement nursing cost allocation systems.

Nurse executives, in the current economic climate, may be requested to make decisions about resuming tasks that historically had been in the nursing domain but presently are done by other disciplines. Since these decisions shape nursing services in a variety of ways, support by non-nursing colleagues is important. This study reports a decision-making strategy that enhanced receptivity throughout the corporation. The strategy used a data base and involved non-nursing leadership persons in examining the issue.

Since each of the methods described has its costs and benefits, more than one method should be used. The combination of methods helps the researcher to obtain an error-free data set. Ideally, value-to-value verification for all data sets is preferred but the multiple entry method is more efficient for large data sets. Each researcher has a definition of large and small data sets. One definition of a large data set is one containing more than 250 records. Such a definition will not be appropriate for all investigators. Therefore, each researcher should balance the allocation of resources needed for a method against the confidence required for the data.
