Subperiodic groups isomorphic to factor groups of reducible space groups

A relationship exists between factor groups of space groups and subperiodic groups. This relationship, an isomorphism between factor groups of reducible space groups and subperiodic groups, can be used in the derivation of higher-dimensional space groups, of lattices of space groups, and of irreducible representations of space groups. Tables of the layer and rod subperiodic groups isomorphic to factor groups of reducible space groups are explicitly given. The manifestation of this relationship, in terms of the symmetry diagrams of space groups and subperiodic groups, is also discussed.

Magnetic subperiodic groups.

The magnetic subperiodic groups, the 31 magnetic frieze-group types, the 394 magnetic rod-group types and the 528 magnetic layer-group types, are derived and given symbols based on the symbols for the nonmagnetic subperiodic groups in Volume E of International Tables for Crystallography. The symbols are constructed in analogy to the Opechowski-Guccione symbols for magnetic space groups. Tables are given that list one group from each type. Each group is specified not only by its symbol but also by explicitly listing the coset representatives of the coset decomposition of the group with respect to its translational subgroup.

Tensor distinction of domain pairs in ferroic crystals.

A classification of domain pairs in ferroic crystals is given in which all domain pairs in each class can be distinguished by the same set of physical property tensors. Tabulations are presented giving in which ferroic phase transitions such domain pairs arise. Whether a physical property tensor can or cannot distinguish between the domains of domain pairs of each class is given for a wide variety of physical properties. This material is based on work supported by the National Science Foundation under grant No. DMR-9722799.
