Instabilities of dispersion-managed solitons in the normal dispersion regime

Dispersion-managed solitons are reviewed within a Gaussian variational approximation and an integral evolution model. In the normal regime of the dispersion map (when the averaged path dispersion is negative), there are two solitons of different pulse duration and energy at a fixed propagation constant. We show that the short soliton with a larger energy is linearly (exponentially) unstable. The other (long) soliton with a smaller energy is linearly stable but hits a resonance with excitations of the dispersion map. The results are compared with the results from recent publications [Bernston et al., Opt. Lett. 23, 900 (1998); Nijhof et al., ibid. 23, 1674 (1998); Grigoryan and Menyuk, ibid. 23, 609 (1998)].

Stability criterion for multicomponent solitary waves

We obtain the most general matrix criterion for stability and instability of multicomponent solitary waves by considering a system of N incoherently coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Soliton stability is studied as a constrained variational problem which is reduced to finite-dimensional linear algebra. We prove that unstable (all real and positive) eigenvalues of the linear stability problem for multicomponent solitary waves are connected with negative eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. The latter is constructed for the energetic surface of N-component spatially localized stationary solutions.

Transmission regimes of periodic nonlinear optical structures

We investigate the input-output transmission regimes of optical structures with periodic nonlinear index. By deriving an analytical model from the Maxwell equations, we analyze the physical processes responsible for multistable and stable behavior. The threshold condition that separates multistable and stable transmission regimes is found exactly within the underlying model. We also derive analytical expressions for the limiting transmitted intensity in the stable regime and for the transmittance in the multistable regime in terms of optical wavelength and material parameters.
