Depletion interaction between two colloidal particles in a nonadsorbing polymer solution.

The depletion effect between two spherical colloidal particles in nonadsorbing polymer solutions is investigated using the self-consistent field theory. The density distributions of polymer segments, the depleted amount and depletion potential are calculated numerically in bispherical coordinates. The effects of chain length, bulk concentration, and solvency are also investigated. In the dilute regime the depleted amount and the depletion potential decrease as the two spherical particles approach to each other. The depth of interaction increases and the width of interaction varies slightly with increasing bulk concentrations. In the semidilute regime, with increasing bulk concentrations the width of interaction decreases and the depth of interaction increases. No distinct repulsive potential is observed in semidilute regime. However, at high concentration the depleted amount exhibits a barrier. The width and the depth of depletion potential increase with increasing the chain length and the solvency. The contact potential is proportional to the polymer concentration and almost independent on the solvency. In addition, the effect of depletion interaction on colloidal stability is analyzed.

Effects of confinement on the order-disorder transition of diblock copolymer melts.

The effects of confinement on the order-disorder transition of diblock copolymer melts are studied theoretically. Confinements are realized by restricting diblock copolymers in finite spaces with different geometries (slabs, cylinders, and spheres). Within the random phase approximation, the correlation functions are calculated using the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian operator inverted Delta(2) in the appropriate geometries. This leads to a size-dependent scattering function, and the minimum of the inverse scattering function determines the spinodal point of the homogeneous phase. For diblock copolymers confined in a slab or in a cylindrical nanopore, the spinodal point of the homogeneous phase (chiN)(s) is found to be independent of the confinement. On the other hand, for diblock copolymers confined in a spherical nanopore, (chiN)(s) depends on the confinement and it oscillates as a function of the radius of the sphere. Further understanding of the finite-size effects is provided by examining the fluctuation modes using the Landau-Brazovskii model.

Light-scattering study of the aggregation of syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) in solution.

Syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate (s-PMMA) may undergo aggregation in n-butyl chloride (n-BuCl) at temperatures below the theta temperature. The aggregation behavior of the s-PMMA with weight-average molecular weight M(w) =6.06 x 10(5) g mol(-1) was studied by a combination of static and dynamic laser-light-scattering experiments. A solution of concentration 1.12 x 10(-4) g mL(-1) was quenched from 50 degrees C (above the theta temperature in n-BuCl, 35 degrees C to 12 degrees C, and the aggregation process was measured over 60 h. The time dependence of M(w) the root-mean-square z-average radius of gyration < R(g) >, and the average hydrodynamic radius were used to monitor the growth of the aggregates, with the result M(w) approximately < R(g) > d(f) (where d(f) = 1.98 +/- 0.02), which implies the formation of a fractal aggregate. The observed fractal dimension, d(f), is close to that expected for a reaction-limited cluster aggregation for which d(f) = 2.1. In addition, atomic force microscopy was used to image the aggregates.
