NMR diffusion measurements in complex mixtures using constant-time-HSQC-IDOSY and computer-optimized spectral aliasing for high resolution in the carbon dimension.

A new 3D pulse sequence for NMR diffusion measurements in complex mixtures is presented. It is based on the constant-time (CT) HSQC experiment and combines diffusion delay with the carbon evolution time. This combination has great potential to obtain high resolution in the carbon dimension. When using classical sampling of the carbon dimension, maximal resolution would require a large number of time increments, leading to unrealistically long acquisition times. The application of computer-optimized spectral aliasing allows one to reduce the number of time increments and the total acquisition time by 1-2 orders of magnitude by taking advantage of the information content of 1D carbon spectra, HSQC experiments, or both. With the new CT-HSQC-IDOSY experiment, the diffusion rates of the six anomers present in a 0.1 M D2O solution of glucose, maltose, and maltotriose could be obtained at natural abundance in 8 h with standard deviations below 5%.

Molecular control of macroscopic cubic, columnar, and lamellar organizations in luminescent lanthanide-containing thermotropic liquid crystals.

The connection of lipophilic gallic acid derivatives at the 5,5'- or 6,6'-positions of the rigid 2,6-bis(1-ethyl-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine core provides two pro-mesogenic tridentate ligands L10 and L12, whose molecular shapes, anisometries, and directional intermolecular pi-stacking can be tuned. X-ray diffraction data in the crystalline state, combined with solution 1H NMR measurements, show that complexation with trivalent lanthanides, Ln(III), produces the neutral hemi-disklike complexes [Ln(Li)(NO3)3] (i = 10, 12), which dimerize to give the rodlike bimetallic complexes [Ln2(Li)2(NO3)6] at lower temperature. The relevant thermodynamic parameters for the latter process depend on the nature of the ligand, the size of the metal ion, and the strength of the intermolecular interactions involved in the condensed phase. These three-dimensional models obtained for the complexes in the crystals and in solution are eventually confronted with small-angle XRD profiles recorded in the intermediate thermotropic liquid crystalline phase, in which the rigidity of the packed polyaromatic cores is maintained, while the alkyl chains are molten. According to the specific geometries and nuclearities of the molecular complexes, three types of mesophases (lamellar, columnar, and cubic) can be induced, which provides a direct correlation between the microscopic arrangements and the macroscopic ordering in lanthanide-containing metallomesogens.

Synthesis of [323]-p-octiphenyls: orthogonal functionalization along a rigid-rod scaffold for refined supramolecular architecture.

[structure: see text] The synthesis of p-octiphenyls carrying orthogonal tert-butyl esters in the peripheral positions 1(2), 2(2), 3(3), 6(2), 7(3), and 8(2) and either p-methoxybenzyl or benzyl ester substituents in the central positions 4(2) and 5(3) is described. Resolution-enhanced HSQC/HMBC two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy is implemented as an attractive method for the complete characterization of complex p-oligophenyl scaffolds.

Dilute liquid crystals used to enhance residual dipolar couplings may alter conformational equilibrium in oligosaccharides.

The solution structures of a trisaccharide and a pentasaccharide containing the Lewis(x) motif were determined by two independent approaches using either dipolar cross-relaxation (NOE) or residual dipolar coupling (RDC) data. For the latter, one-bond 13C[bond](1)H RDC enhanced by two different mineral liquid crystals were used alone. Home-written programs were employed firstly for measuring accurately the coupling constants in the direct dimension of non-decoupled HSQC experiments, secondly for transforming each RDC data set into geometrical restraints. In this second program, the complete molecular structure was expressed in a unique frame where the alignment tensor is diagonal. Assuming that the pyranose rings are rigid, their relative orientation is defined by optimizing the glycosidic torsion angles. For the trisaccharide, a good agreement was observed between the results of both approaches (NOE and RDC). In contrast, for the pentasaccharide, strong discrepancies appeared, which seem to result from interactions between the pentasaccharide and the mesogens, affecting conformational equilibrium. This observation is of importance, as it reveals that using simultaneously NOE and RDC can be hazardous as the former represent 99% of the molecules free in solution, whereas the latter correspond to less than 1% of the structure bound to the mesogen.
