1,3,6,9,12,14,17,20-octaethynyltetrabenz[a,b,f,j,k,o]-4,5,10,11,15,16,21,22- octadehydro[18]annulene: a carbon-rich hydrocarbon.

Dodecaynes 1a-d have been prepared via a convergent strategy that employs Sonogashira couplings as the carbon-carbon bond-forming tool. Due to the steric bulk of the DMTS groups, 1c adopts a nonplanar conformation, the dynamics of which have been probed by VT-NMR. The cobalt-catalyzed isomerization of 1a,b produced the new conjugated phenylenes 2a,b and 3a,b, respectively. [structure: see text]

A novel ferroportin mutation in a Canadian family with autosomal dominant hemochromatosis.

We report a new mutation, Asn185Asp, in exon 6 of the ferroportin gene (FPN1) in 15 members of three successive generations of a Canadian family of Scandinavian origin with autosomal dominant hemochromatosis. Hyperferritinemia with low transferrin saturation was noted in younger family members, seven of whom were aged 20 years or less at the time of diagnosis. In those individuals first diagnosed with hemochromatosis in later life, marked hyperferritinemia was accompanied by high transferrin saturation. In contrast to the phenotype of high ferritin with low saturation first reported for ferroportin disease, this family demonstrates a phenotype of iron indices that varies with age.

Hindered rotation in an "exploded" biphenyl.

The first cases of hindered rotation around the triple bond in simple diphenylacetylenes were observed, including that in chiral 2,2'-bis(trimethylsilyl)-6,6'-bis(dimethylthexylsilyl)diphenylacetylene.

Plant sterols and their role in combined use with statins for lipid lowering.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is currently one of the major contributors to the global burden of disease. Combination treatments to promote a maximal reduction of the ratio between total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein are currently the most effective way of preventing CVD. In this review, we assess the role of plant sterols and statins in CVD prevention. Statins have been used by millions of patients at high to moderate risk of CVD, while plant sterols are potentially available to whole populations in food products. The benefits and risks of each compound, as well as the combination, are discussed.

Remarkably selective iridium catalysts for the elaboration of aromatic C-H bonds.

Arylboron compounds have intriguing properties and are important building blocks for chemical synthesis. A family of Ir catalysts now enables the direct synthesis of arylboron compounds from aromatic hydrocarbons and boranes under "solventless" conditions. The Ir catalysts are highly selective for C-H activation and do not interfere with subsequent in situ transformations, including Pd-mediated cross-couplings with aryl halides. By virtue of their favorable activities and exceptional selectivities, these Ir catalysts impart the synthetic versatility of arylboron reagents to C-H bonds in aromatic and heteroaromatic hydrocarbons.
