Photoelectron imaging of I2- at 5.826 eV.

We report the anion photoelectron spectrum of I2- taken at 5.826 eV detachment energy using velocity mapped imaging. The photoelectron spectrum exhibits bands resulting from transitions to the bound regions of the X 1Sigmag+(0g+), A' 3Piu(2u), A 3Piu(1u), and B 3Piu(0u+) electronic states as well as bands resulting from transitions to the repulsive regions of several I2 electronic states: the B' 3Piu(0u-), B" 1Piu(1u), 3Pig(2g), a 3Pig(1g), 3Pig(0g-), and C 3Sigmau+(1u) states. We simulate the photoelectron spectrum using literature parameters for the I2- and I2 ground and excited states. The photoelectron spectrum includes bands resulting from transitions to several high-lying excited states of I2 that have not been seen experimentally: 3Pig(0g-), 1Pig3(1g), 1 3Sigmag-3(0g+), and the 1Sigmag-3(0u-) states of I2. Finally, the photoelectron spectrum at 5.826 eV allows for the correction of a previous misassignment for the vertical detachment energy of the I2 B 3Piu(0u+) state.

Photodissociation dynamics of ClN3 at 193 nm.

Photofragment translational spectroscopy was used to identify the primary and secondary reaction pathways in 193 nm photodissociation of chlorine azide (ClN(3)) under collision-free conditions. Both the molecular elimination (NCl+N(2)) and the radical bond rupture channel (Cl+N(3)) were investigated and compared with earlier results at 248 nm. The radical channel strongly dominates, just as at 248 nm. At 193 nm, the ClN(3) (C (1)A(")) state is excited, rather than the B (1)A(') state that is accessed at 248 nm, resulting in different photofragment angular distributions. The chlorine translational energy distribution probing the dynamics of the radical bond rupture channel shows three distinct peaks, with the two fastest peaks occurring at the same translational energies as the two peaks seen at 248 nm that were previously assigned to linear and "high energy" N(3). Hence, nearly all the additional photon energy relative to 248 nm appears as N(3) internal excitation rather than as translational energy, resulting in considerably more spontaneous dissociation of N(3) to N(2)+N.

Photoelectron imaging of large anionic methanol clusters: (MeOH)n - (n approximately 70-460).

Electron solvation in methanol anion clusters, (MeOH)(n) (-) (n approximately 70-460), is studied by photoelectron imaging. Two isomers are observed: methanol I, with vertical binding energies (VBE) ranging from 2-2.5 eV, and methanol II, with much lower VBE's between 0.2 and 0.5 eV. The VBE's of the two isomers depend linearly on n(-1/3) with nearly identical slopes. We propose that the excess electron is internally solvated in methanol I clusters, whereas in methanol II it resides in a dipole-bound surface-state. Evidence of an excited state accessible at 1.55 eV is observed for methanol I.

Heterodyne mixing of laser fields for temporal gating of high-order harmonic generation.

The concept of heterodyne mixing of laser fields is theoretically applied to the process of high-harmonic generation to enhance and modulate the kinetic energy of the active electron on subcycle time scales. A very small amount of intensity in the heterodyne field creates a significant modification of the electron kinetic energy, due to its amplification by the strong fundamental field in the kinetic-energy term, in which the heterodyne mixing occurs. Quantum calculations are carried out to verify the predictions of the classical results, demonstrating very good qualitative and quantitative agreement. Applications of the heterodyne-mixing concept are the extension of the harmonic cutoff to higher photon energies and the temporal gating of attosecond pulse production.

Photoionization and photofragmentation of SF6 in helium nanodroplets.

The photoionization of He droplets doped with SF6 was investigated using tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation from the Advanced Light Source (ALS). The resulting ionization and photofragmentation dynamics were characterized using time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with photofragment and photoelectron imaging. Results are compared to those of gas-phase SF6 molecules. We find dissociative photoionization to SF5+ to be the dominant channel, in agreement with previous results. Key new findings are that (a) the photoelectron spectrum of the SF6 in the droplet is similar but not identical to that of the gas-phase species, (b) the SF5+ photofragment velocity distribution is considerably slower upon droplet photoionization, and (c) fragmentation to SF4+ and SF3+ is much less than in the photoionization of bare SF6. From these measurements we obtain new insights into the mechanism of SF6 photoionization within the droplet and the cooling of the hot photofragment ions produced by dissociative photoionization.

Probing chemical dynamics with negative ions.

Experiments are reviewed in which key problems in chemical dynamics are probed by experiments based on photodetachment and/or photoexcitation of negative ions. Examples include transition state spectroscopy of biomolecular reactions, spectroscopy of open shell van der Waals complexes, photodissociation of free radicals, and time-resolved dynamics in clusters. The experimental methods used in these investigations are described along with representative systems that have been studied.

Infrared spectroscopy of hydrated sulfate dianions.

We report the first infrared spectra of multiply-charged anions in the gas phase. The spectra of SO(4) (2-)(H(2)O)(n), with n=3-24, show four main bands assigned to two vibrations of the dianionic core, the water bending mode, and solvent libration. The triply degenerate SO(4) (2-) antisymmetric stretch vibration probes the local solvent symmetry, while the solvent librational band is sensitive to the hydrogen bonding network. The spectra and accompanying electronic structure calculations indicate a highly symmetric structure for the n=6 cluster and closure of the first solvation shell at n=12.

Circular phase mask for control and stabilization of single optical filaments.

We experimentally demonstrate an efficient way to control and stabilize single optical filaments initiated by ultrashort laser pulses in a rare gas medium. This is done by the application of a stationary two-dimensional phase mask to the laser beam prior to focusing. Simple circular phase-step patterns of a given radius and relative phase are sufficient to stabilize the pointing of the filament output and to optimize the spectral bandwidth of the light without any resulting loss of input laser power.

Slow electron velocity-map imaging photoelectron spectra of the methoxide anion.

High resolution anion photodetachment spectra are presented for the methoxide anion and its fully deuterated counterpart. The spectra were obtained with slow electron velocity-map imaging. Improved electron affinities are determined for CH3O as 1.5690+/-0.0019 eV and for CD3O as 1.5546+/-0.0019 eV. The spectra resolve many features associated with spin-orbit and vibronic coupling that were not seen in previous photodetachment studies. Photoelectron angular distributions taken as a function of detachment wavelength for the ground vibronic state transitions are recorded and are consistent with the removal of a nonbonding, p-type electron localized on the oxygen atom. Several hot bands and sequence bands are observed for the first time, providing insight into the vibrational structure of the methoxide anion. The results are compared to recent calculations of the anion photoelectron spectra that incorporate bilinear coupling terms among the methoxy vibrational modes and are found to be in reasonable agreement.

Photoionization of helium nanodroplets doped with rare gas atoms.

Photoionization of He droplets doped with rare gas atoms (Rg=Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe) was studied by time-of-flight mass spectrometry, utilizing synchrotron radiation from the Advanced Light Source from 10 to 30 eV. High resolution mass spectra were obtained at selected photon energies, and photoion yield curves were measured for several ion masses (or ranges of ion masses) over a wide range of photon energies. Only indirect ionization of the dopant rare gas atoms was observed, either by excitation or charge transfer from the surrounding He atoms. Significant dopant ionization from excitation transfer was seen at 21.6 eV, the maximum of He 2p 1P absorption band for He droplets, and from charge transfer above 23 eV, the threshold for ionization of pure He droplets. No Ne+ or Ar+ signal from droplet photoionization was observed, but peaks from HenNe+ and HenAr+ were seen that clearly originated from droplets. For droplets doped with Rg=Kr or Xe, both Rg+ and HenRg+ ions were observed. For all rare gases, Rg2+ and HenRgm+ (n,m> or =1) were produced by droplet photoionization. Mechanisms of dopant ionization and subsequent dynamics are discussed.

Photodissociation dynamics of the HCNN radical.

The photodissociation dynamics of the diazomethyl (HCNN) radical have been studied using fast radical beam photofragment translational spectroscopy. A photofragment yield spectrum was obtained for the range of 25,510-40,820 cm(-1), and photodissociation was shown to occur for energies above 25,600 cm(-1). The only product channel observed was the formation of CH and N2. Fragment translational energy and angular distributions were obtained at several energies in the range covered by the photofragment yield spectrum. The fragment translational energy distributions showed at least two distinct features at energies up to 4.59 eV, and were not well fit by phase space theory at any of the excitation energies studied. A revised C-N bond dissociation energy and heat of formation for HCNN, D0(HC-NN)=1.139+/-0.019 eV and DeltafH0(HCNN)=5.010+/-0.023 eV, were determined.

Single attosecond pulse generation in the multicycle-driver regime by adding a weak second-harmonic field.

We present a method of producing single attosecond pulses by high-harmonic generation with multicycle driver laser pulses. This can be achieved by tailoring the driving pulse so that attosecond pulses are produced only every full cycle of the oscillating laser field rather than every half-cycle. It is shown by classical and quantum-mechanical model calculations that even a minor addition (1%) of phase-locked second-harmonic light to the 800 nm fundamental driver pulse for high-harmonic generation leads to a major (15%) difference in the maximum kinetic energies of the recombining electrons in adjacent half-cycles.

Spectroscopic investigation of Al2N and its anion via negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy.

Negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy was used to elucidate the electronic and geometric structure of the gaseous Al2N/Al2N- molecules, using photodetachment wavelengths of 416 nm (2.977 eV), 355 nm (3.493 eV), and 266 nm (4.661 eV). Three electronic bands are observed and assigned to the X2Sigma(u)+ <-- X1Sigma(g)+, A2Pi(u) <-- X1Sigma(g)+, and B2Sigma(g)+ <-- X1Sigma(g)+ electronic transitions, with the caveat that one or both excited states may be slightly bent. With the aid of density functional theory calculations and Franck-Condon spectral simulations, we determine the adiabatic electron affinity of Al2N, 2.571 +/- 0.008 eV, along with geometry changes upon photodetachment, vibrational frequencies, and excited-state term energies. Observation of excitation of the odd vibrational levels of the antisymmetric stretch (nu3) suggests a breakdown of the Franck-Condon approximation, caused by the vibronic coupling between the X2Sigma(u)+ and B2Sigma(g)+ electronic states through the nu3 mode.

Spectroscopic characterization of the ground and low-lying electronic states of Ga2N via anion photoelectron spectroscopy.

Anion photoelectron spectra of Ga(2)N(-) were measured at photodetachment wavelengths of 416 nm(2.978 eV), 355 nm(3.493 eV), and 266 nm(4.661 eV). Both field-free time-of-flight and velocity-map imaging methods were used to collect the data. The field-free time-of-flight data provided better resolution of the features, while the velocity-map-imaging data provided more accurate anisotropy parameters for the peaks. Transitions from the ground electronic state of the anion to two electronic states of the neutral were observed and analyzed with the aid of electronic structure calculations and Franck-Condon simulations. The ground-state band was assigned to a transition between linear ground states of Ga(2)N(-)(X (1)Sigma(g) (+)) and Ga(2)N(X (2)Sigma(u) (+)), yielding the electron affinity of Ga(2)N, 2.506+/-0.008 eV. Vibrationally resolved features in the ground-state band were assigned to symmetric and antisymmetric stretch modes of Ga(2)N, with the latter allowed by vibronic coupling to an excited electronic state. The energy of the observed excited neutral state agrees with that calculated for the A (2)Pi(u) state, but the congested nature of this band in the photoelectron spectrum is more consistent with a transition to a bent neutral state.

Photofragment coincidence imaging of small I-(H2O)n clusters excited to the charge-transfer-to-solvent state.

The photodissociation dynamics of small I-(H2O)n(n=2-5) clusters excited to their charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) states have been studied using photofragment coincidence imaging. Upon excitation to the CTTS state, two photodissociation channels were observed. The major channel (approximately 90%) is a two-body process forming neutral I+(H2O)n photofragments, and the minor channel is a three-body process forming I+(H2O)n-1+H2O fragments. Both processes display translational energy [P(ET)] distributions peaking at ET=0 with little available energy partitioned into translation. Clusters excited to the detachment continuum rather than to the CTTS state display the same two channels with similar P(ET) distributions. The observation of similar P(ET) distributions from the two sets of experiments suggests that in the CTTS experiments, I atom loss occurs after autodetachment of the excited [I(H2O)n-]* cluster or, less probably, that the presence of the excess electron has little effect on the departing I atom.

Dynamics of charge-transfer-to-solvent precursor states in I- (water)n (n = 3-10) clusters studied with photoelectron imaging.

The dynamics of charge-transfer-to-solvent states are studied in I- (H2O)(n=3-10) clusters and their deuterated counterparts using time-resolved photoelectron imaging. The photoelectron spectra for clusters with n > or = 5 reveal multiple time scales for dynamics after their electronic excitation. An increase in the vertical detachment energy (VDE) by several hundred millielectronvolts on a time scale of approximately 1 ps is attributed to stabilization of the excess electron, primarily through rearrangement of the solvent molecules, but a contribution to this stabilization from motion of the I atom cannot be ruled out. The VDE drops by approximately 50 meV on a time scale of tens of picoseconds; this is attributed to loss of the neutral iodine atom. Finally, the pump-probe signal decays with a time constant of 60 ps-3 ns, increasing with cluster size. This decay is commensurate with the growth of very slow electrons and is attributed to autodetachment. Smaller clusters (n = 3, 4) display simpler dynamics. Anisotropy parameters are reported for clusters n = 4-9.

Determination of absolute photoionization cross sections of the phenyl radical.

Photoionization cross sections of the phenyl radical to form the phenyl cation were measured using tunable vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation coupled with photofragment translational spectroscopy. The phenyl radical was produced via 193- or 248-nm dissociation of chlorobenzene. At 10.0 eV, the photoionization cross sections for the phenyl radical averaged over product channels were found to be 13.4 +/- 2.0 and 13.2 +/- 2.0 Mb, respectively, with very little effect seen from the range of internal excitation produced at the two photolysis wavelengths. Using the photoionization cross section values for each channel, photoionization efficiency curves for the phenyl radical were placed on an absolute scale from 7.8 to 10.8 eV.
