Aggregation of finite-size particles with variable mobility.

New model equations are derived for dynamics of aggregation of finite-size particles. The differences from standard Debye-Hückel and Keller-Segel models are that the mobility of particles depends on the configuration of their neighbors and linear diffusion acts on locally averaged particle density. The evolution of collapsed states in these models reduces exactly to finite-dimensional dynamics of interacting particle clumps. Simulations show these collapsed (clumped) states emerge from smooth initial conditions, even in one spatial dimension. Extensions to two and three dimensions are also discussed.

Soliton dynamics in computational anatomy.

Computational anatomy (CA) has introduced the idea of anatomical structures being transformed by geodesic deformations on groups of diffeomorphisms. Among these geometric structures, landmarks and image outlines in CA are shown to be singular solutions of a partial differential equation that is called the geodesic EPDiff equation. A recently discovered momentum map for singular solutions of EPDiff yields their canonical Hamiltonian formulation, which in turn provides a complete parameterization of the landmarks by their canonical positions and momenta. The momentum map provides an isomorphism between landmarks (and outlines) for images and singular soliton solutions of the EPDiff equation. This isomorphism suggests a new dynamical paradigm for CA, as well as new data representation.

Intermittency in the joint cascade of energy and helicity.

The statistics of the energy and helicity fluxes in isotropic turbulence are studied using high resolution direct numerical simulation. The scaling exponents of the energy flux agree with those of the transverse velocity structure functions through refined similarity hypothesis, consistent with Kraichnan's prediction. The helicity flux is even more intermittent than the energy flux. Consistent with this observation, the spatial helicity-flux structures are finer than those of energy flux and more tubelike in geometry.

Mean effects of turbulence on elliptic instability in fluids.

Elliptic instability in fluids is discussed in the context of the Lagrangian-averaged Navier-Stokes-alpha (LANS-alpha) turbulence model. This model preserves the Craik-Criminale (CC) family of solutions consisting of a columnar eddy and a Kelvin wave. The LANS-alpha model is shown to preserve elliptic instability. However, the model shifts the critical stability angle. This shift increases (decreases) the maximum growth rate for long (short) waves. It also introduces a band of stable CC solutions for short waves.
