Boundary force effects exerted on solitons in highly nonlinear media.

We study the effects caused by remote boundaries on soliton dynamics in nonlinear media with a large range of nonlocality, and demonstrate theoretically and experimentally how asymmetric boundary forces can lead to soliton steering and oscillation in predetermined trajectories.

Surface lattice solitons.

We study theoretically nonlinear surface waves in optical lattices and show that solitons can exist at the heterointerface between two different semi-infinite 1D waveguide arrays, as well as at the boundaries of a 2D nonlinear lattice. The existence and properties of these surface soliton solutions are investigated in detail.

Wave and defect dynamics in nonlinear photonic quasicrystals.

Quasicrystals are unique structures with long-range order but no periodicity. Their properties have intrigued scientists ever since their discovery and initial theoretical analysis. The lack of periodicity excludes the possibility of describing quasicrystal structures with well-established analytical tools, including common notions like Brillouin zones and Bloch's theorem. New and unique features such as fractal-like band structures and 'phason' degrees of freedom are introduced. In general, it is very difficult to directly observe the evolution of electronic waves in solid-state atomic quasicrystals, or the dynamics of the structure itself. Here we use optical induction to create two-dimensional photonic quasicrystals, whose macroscopic nature allows us to explore wave transport phenomena. We demonstrate that light launched at different quasicrystal sites travels through the lattice in a way equivalent to quantum tunnelling of electrons in a quasiperiodic potential. At high intensity, lattice solitons are formed. Finally, we directly observe dislocation dynamics when crystal sites are allowed to interact with each other. Our experimental results apply not only to photonics, but also to other quasiperiodic systems such as matter waves in quasiperiodic traps, generic pattern-forming systems as in parametrically excited surface waves, liquid quasicrystals, and the more familiar atomic quasicrystals.

Method of images in optical discrete systems.

We show that optical wave propagation in discrete boundary geometries can be effectively analyzed using the method of images. Such semi-infinite and finite discrete systems include, for example, waveguide arrays as well as coupled resonator optical waveguides. In the linear domain, the diffraction properties of one- and two-dimensional bounded array structures are considered in detail. The possibility of using the method of images to numerically investigate nonlinear semi-infinite lattices is also discussed.

Continuous-wave-controlled nonlinear x-wave generation.

We demonstrate that the interaction between a two-dimensional localized wave packet and a continuous-wave background can lead to efficient x-wave generation in nonlinear bidispersive optical systems. This x-wave generation process was found to depend on both the relative phase and amplitude of the background with respect to the superimposed wave packet. Pertinent configurations that lead to such generation are considered.

Nondiffracting beams in periodic media.

We identify nondiffracting beams in two-dimensional periodic systems, exhibiting symmetry properties and phase structure characteristic of the band(s) they are associated with.

Discrete surface solitons.

It is theoretically shown that discrete nonlinear surface waves are possible in waveguide lattices. These self-trapped states are located at the edge of the array and can exist only above a certain power threshold. The excitation characteristics and stability properties of these surface waves are systematically investigated.

Discrete Talbot effect in waveguide arrays.

We report the first observation of discrete Talbot revivals in one-dimensional waveguide arrays. Unlike continuous systems where the Talbot self-imaging effect always occurs irrespective of the pattern period, in discrete configurations this process is only possible for a specific set of periodicities. Recurrence of different input periodic patterns is observed in good agreement with theory.

Soliton dragging by dynamic optical lattices.

We report on the phenomenon of controllable soliton dragging by dynamic optical lattices induced by three imbalanced interfering plane waves. Because of such an imbalance, the transverse momentum of the lattice does not vanish, and thus the dynamic lattice can cause soliton dragging. The dragging rate is shown to depend on the amplitude and on the angle of incidence of the third plane wave making the optical lattice.

Observation of random-phase lattice solitons.

The coherence of waves in periodic systems (lattices) is crucial to their dynamics, as interference effects, such as Bragg reflections, largely determine their propagation. Whereas linear systems allow superposition, nonlinearity introduces a non-trivial interplay between localization effects, coupling between lattice sites, and incoherence. Until recently, all research on solitary waves (solitons) in nonlinear lattices has involved only coherent waves. In such cases, linear dispersion or diffraction of wave packets can be balanced by nonlinear effects, resulting in coherent lattice (or 'discrete') solitons; these have been studied in many branches of science. However, in most natural systems, waves with only partial coherence are more common, because fluctuations (thermal, quantum or some other) can reduce the correlation length to a distance comparable to the lattice spacing. Such systems should support random-phase lattice solitons displaying distinct features. Here we report the experimental observation of random-phase lattice solitons, demonstrating their self-trapping and local periodicity in real space, in addition to their multi-peaked power spectrum in momentum space. We discuss the relevance of such solitons to other nonlinear periodic systems in which fluctuating waves propagate, such as atomic systems, plasmas and molecular chains.

Observation of discrete gap solitons in binary waveguide arrays.

We report an experimental study of discrete gap solitons in binary arrays of optical waveguides. We observe self-focusing indicating soliton generation when the inclination angle of an input beam is slightly above the Bragg angle and show that the propagation direction of the emerging gap soliton is influenced by the effect of interband momentum exchange.

Bloch oscillations in optical dissipative lattices.

We show that Bloch oscillations are possible in dissipative optical waveguide lattices with a linearly varying propagation constant. These oscillations occur in spite of the fact that the Bloch wave packet experiences coupling gain and (or) loss. Experimentally, this process can be observed in different settings, such as in laser arrays and lattices of semiconductor optical amplifiers. In addition, we demonstrate that these systems can suppress instabilities arising from preferential mode noise growth.

Grating-mediated waveguiding.

We propose a method of optical waveguiding, which relies on Bragg diffractions from a 1D grating that gives rise to waveguiding in the direction normal to the grating wave vector. The waveguide structure consists of a shallow 1D grating that has a bell- or trough-shaped amplitude in the confinement direction. Finally, we provide an experimental proof of the concept for this mechanism.

Stable soliton complexes in two-dimensional photonic lattices.

We show that two-dimensional photonic Kerr nonlinear lattices can support stable soliton complexes composed of several solitons packed together with appropriately engineered phases. This may open up new prospects for encoding pixellike images made of robust discrete or lattice solitons.

Bessel X waves in two- and three-dimensional bidispersive optical systems.

We show that new families of two- and three-dimensional nondiffracting Bessel X waves are possible in linear bidispersive optical systems. These X waves can be observed in both bulk and waveguide configurations as well as in photonic crystal lattices that simultaneously exhibit normal and anomalous dispersive-diffractive properties in different spatial or spatiotemporal coordinates.

We present the first experimental observation of spatially incoherent elliptic solitons. We use partially spatially incoherent light with anisotropic correlation statistics and observe elliptic solitons supported by the photorefractive screening nonlinearity.

Dissipative photonic lattice solitons.

We show that discrete dissipative optical lattice solitons are possible in waveguide array configurations that involve periodically patterned semiconductor optical amplifiers and saturable absorbers. The characteristics of these low-power soliton states are investigated, and their propagation constant eigenvalues are mapped on Floquet-Bloch band diagrams. The prospect of observing such low-power dissipative lattice solitons is discussed in detail.

Discrete solitons and soliton-induced dislocations in partially coherent photonic lattices.

We investigate both experimentally and theoretically the interaction between a light beam and a photonic lattice optically induced with partially coherent light. We demonstrate a clear transition from two-dimensional discrete diffraction to discrete solitons in such a partially coherent lattice and show that the nonlinear interaction process is associated with a host of new phenomena including lattice dislocation, lattice deformation, and creation of structures akin to optical polarons.
