A study to investigate high readmission rates for COPD.

When an NHS trust found it had high readmission rates among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, nurses from the acute respiratory assessment service decided to find out why. An audit found that, in fact, a very small number of patients were the cause of the problem. They suggest that improved care at home after discharge could help resolve the issue.

Acute Disease↗

Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation for COPD patients.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may experience acute exacerbations of their condition, leading to respiratory failure. Traditionally, patients may have been admitted to ITU for invasive mechanical ventilation but, with the introduction of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation by facial or nasal mask, more of these patients are being treated in general wards.

Disinfection↗

The cost-effectiveness of outreach respiratory care for COPD patients.

An acute respiratory assessment service was established in a hospital that serves an area with a large number of COPD patients. The service aims to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and provides a detailed patient assessment, treatment at home where appropriate and support. An economic evaluation demonstrated that the service was also cost effective.

Community-Institutional Relations↗

An audit of provision of long-term oxygen therapy for COPD patients.

Long-term oxygen therapy can reduce morbidity and mortality in COPD patients with chronic hypoxaemia. However, there is a need to provide ongoing support for these patients, ensuring that they receive appropriate information and education, and that their condition is fully monitored to prevent any unnecessary complications and improve their overall quality of life.

Humans↗

An audit of the management of acute asthma in accident and emergency.

It is estimated that 3.4 million people suffer from asthma in the UK, with 640,000 having the condition in a severe or very severe form (Action on Smoking and Health, 2002). Asthma also accounts for 1,250 deaths annually (De Keyser, 2002). Between 1980 and 1990 the prevalence of asthma in males increased by 114 per cent and in females by 165 per cent (Respiratory Alliance, 2003).
