Nanostructure dependence of field-effect mobility in regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) thin film field effect transistors.

Low polydispersity regioregular polythiophenes with number average molecular weights ranging from 2 to 13 kDa were cast under the same conditions from solution to form a series of field effect transistors (FETs). Tapping mode AFM and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering revealed that in all cases the polymers formed regular nanofibrillar morphologies with the width of nanofibrils proportional to the weight average contour length of polymer chains, indicating that conjugated backbones were oriented perpendicular to the nanofibril axes. FET charge carrier mobilities exhibited exponential dependence on nanofibril width, pointing to the decisive role of extended conjugated pathways in charge transport.

Multilayer X-ray optics at CHESS.

Almost half of the X-ray beamlines at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) are based on multilayer optics. ;Traditional' multilayers with an energy resolution of DeltaE/E approximately 2% are routinely used to deliver X-ray flux enhanced by a factor of 10(2) in comparison with standard Si(111) optics. Sagittal-focusing multilayers with fixed radius provide an additional factor of 10 gain in flux density. High-resolution multilayer optics with DeltaE/E approximately 0.2% are now routinely used by MacCHESS crystallographers. New wide-bandpass multilayers with DeltaE/E = 5% and 10% have been designed and tested for potential applications in macromolecular crystallography. Small d-spacing multilayers with d < or = 20 A have been successfully used to extend the energy range of multilayer optics. Analysis of the main characteristics of the Mo/B4C and W/B4C small d-spacing multilayer optics shows enhancement in their performance at higher energies. Chemical vapour deposited SiC, with a bulk thermal conductivity of a factor of two higher than that of silicon, has been successfully introduced as a substrate material for multilayer optics. Characteristics of different types of multilayer optics at CHESS beamlines and their applications in a variety of scattering, diffraction and imaging techniques are discussed.

Reciprocal space mapping and single-crystal scattering rods.

Reciprocal space mapping using a linear gas detector in combination with a matching Soller collimator has been applied to map scattering rods of well oriented organic microcrystals grown on a solid surface. Formulae are provided to correct image distortions in angular space and to determine the required oscillation range, in order to measure properly integrated scattering intensities.

Troika II: a versatile beamline for the study of liquid and solid interfaces.

The Troika II beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility was conceived as a versatile beamline for the study of liquid and solid interfaces, combining grazing-incidence diffraction, X-ray reflectivity and grazing-incidence small-angle scattering in a single instrument. Scattering experiments can be performed both in horizontal and in vertical scattering geometry. Additional options are the use of analyzer crystals for high-resolution studies in both the horizontal and the vertical scattering geometry as well as the use of a horizontal microfocusing mirror for experiments requiring very high flux onto the sample. Here, the way in which the features of the beamline have been exploited in selected recent experiments is described.
