Comment on "Wealth condensation in Pareto macroeconomies".

In a recent study of the Pareto macroeconomy [Phys. Rev. E 65, 026102 (2002)], a surprising deviation to the power law distribution of the large wealths is reported. We comment that such a "corruption" phenomenon can be reproduced in a much simplified framework. The corruption disappears when the small wealths are further included in a mean-field treatment. The constraint of the total-wealth conservation leads to a cutoff in the power-law tail, in contrast to the prominent enhancement reported previously.

Lane-changing behavior on highways.

We study the lane-changing behavior in multilane highway modeling by a cellular automaton. We analyze the effects of speed limit and stochastic noise. A new parameter is introduced to allow vehicles not to change lanes even when the environmental criteria are met. Without stochastic noise, the lane-changing rate vanishes in the stationary states of a homogeneous highway. With stochastic noise, vehicles change lanes frequently even when there are no slow vehicles to overtake. The lane-changing rate reflects the intrinsic fluctuations much more than the inhomogeneity of the highway. Aggressive vehicles which change lanes at every opportunity will only keep a speed slightly larger than others.

Highway on-ramp control.

We study the phase transition on a highway induced by the fluctuations of on-ramp flow. The highway traffic is provided by a hydrodynamical model. We analyze the characteristics of perturbations to induce congestion near on ramp. The phase boundary is obtained. A scaling relation is revealed. We also analyze the time evolution of the local density profile. Conventional control mechanisms to regulate the on-ramp flow are examined. A control scheme is proposed to suppress the congestion.
