The interplay of inverted redox potentials and aromaticity in the oxidized states of new pi-electron donors: 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene and 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene derivatives.

Derivatives of 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene (9) and 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene (10) have been synthesised using Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions of (1,3-dithiol-2-yl)phosphonate reagents with fluorenone and thioxanthen-9-one. X-ray crystallography, solution electrochemistry, optical spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry and simultaneous electrochemistry and electron paramagnetic resonance (SEEPR), combined with theoretical calculations performed at the B3P86/6-31G** level, elucidate the interplay of the electronic and structural properties in these molecules. These compounds are strong two-electron donors, and the oxidation potentials depend on the electronic structure of the oxidised state. Two, single-electron oxidations (E(1)ox < E(1)ox) were observed for 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)fluorene systems (9). In contrast, derivatives of 9-(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)thioxanthene (10) display the unusual phenomenon of inverted potentials (E(1)ox > E(1)ox) resulting in a single, two-electron oxidation process. The latter is due to the aromatic structure of the thioxanthenium cation (formed on the loss of a second electron), which stabilises the dication state (10(2+)) compared with the radical cation. This contrasts with the nonaromatic structure of the fluorenium cation of system 9. The two-electron oxidation wave in the thioxanthene derivatives is split into two separate one-electron waves in the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone derivatives 27-29 owing to destabilisation of the dication state.

Rational modulation of the periodicity in linear hydrogen-bonded assemblies of trimesic acid on surfaces.

We demonstrate a surprising cooperative adsorption process at the liquid-solid interface, involving self-assembly in which a three-fold hydrogen-bonding unit (trimesic acid, TMA) is forced into a linear pattern by noncovalent interaction with an alcohol. Our work shows that the unexpected linear pattern formed by coadsorption of TMA and alcohols can be modulated in size by choosing alcohols with different chain lengths.

Rectifying diodes from asymmetrically functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Asymmetrically functionalized single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been prepared by a covalent reaction of an 11-mercaptoundecanol-modified Au surface with oxidized SWNT cylinders. While one end of the tubes is attached to gold substrate via ester groups, the free carboxylic substituents on the other end can be either ionized (CO2-) or esterified (CO2Et), creating a donor-acceptor asymmetric and acceptor-acceptor symmetric SWNT, respectively. Study of the SWNT monolayer conductance in Hg drop junction experiments reveals a pronounced diode-like behavior for donor-SWNT-acceptor junctions, while acceptor-SWNT-acceptor junctions are electrically symmetric.

Self-assembly and multistage redox chemistry of strong electron acceptors on metal surfaces: polynitrofluorenes on gold and platinum.

Nitrofluoren-9-one and nitrofluoren-9-dicyanomethylene electron acceptors 7, 8, and 11 functionalized with a terminal thioctic acid unit have been synthesized from 2,4,5,7-tetranitrofluorenone. The self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of these compounds on gold, formed via gold-sulfur interaction, have been fully characterized by electrochemical, FTIR, ellipsometry, and contact angle measurements. Cyclic voltammetry of SAMs reveals two reversible single-electron reduction waves for fluorenone derivatives 7a,b and 11, and three single-electron reductions for the dicyanomethylene-fluorene 8b, providing the first observation of a radical trianion species in SAMs. The tendency of the thioctic anchor to form multilayers via disulfide links is noted.

A new simple synthesis of poly(thiophene-methine)s.

Acid-promoted polycondensation of 3,4-(ethylenedioxy)thiophene-2-carbaldehyde leads to a conjugated heavily p-doped poly(thiophene-methine), which can be dedoped leading to a low band-gap neutral polymer.

The first studies of a tetrathiafulvalene-sigma-acceptor molecular rectifier.

Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of a donor-acceptor diad TTF-sigma-(trinitrofluorene) (8) with an extremely low HOMO-LUMO gap (0.3 eV) have been used to create molecular junction devices that show rectification behavior. By virtue of structural similarities and position of molecular orbitals, 8 is the closest well-studied analogue of the model Aviram-Ratner unimolecular rectifier (TTF-sigma-TCNQ). Compressing the monolayer results in aligning the molecules, and is followed by a drastic increase in the rectification ratio. The direction of rectification depends on the electrodes used and is different in n-Si/8/Ti and Au/8/C16H33S-Hg junctions. The molecular nature of such behavior was corroborated by control experiments with fatty acids and by reversing the rectification direction with changing the molecular orientation (Au/D-sigma-A versus Au/A-sigma-D).

Solid-state synthesis of a conducting polythiophene via an unprecedented heterocyclic coupling reaction.

Prolonged storage ( approximately 2 years) or gentle heating (50-80 degrees C) of crystalline 2,5-dibromo-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (DBEDOT) affords a highly conducting, bromine-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), as confirmed by solid-state NMR, FTIR, CV, and vis-NIR spectroscopies. The novel solid-state polymerization (SSP) does not occur for 2,5-dichloro-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (DCEDOT), and requires a much higher temperature (>130 degrees C) for 2,5-diiodo-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (DIEDOT). X-ray structural analysis of the above dihalothiophenes reveals short Hal.Hal distances between adjacent molecules in DBEDOT and DIEDOT, but not in DCEDOT. The polymerization may also occur in the melt but is significantly slower and leads to poorly conductive material. Detailed studies of the reaction were performed using ESR, DSC, microscopy, and gravimetric analyses. SSP starts on crystal defect sites; it is exothermic by 14 kcal/mol and requires activation energy of approximately 26 kcal/mol (for DBEDOT). The temperature dependence of the conductivity of SSP-PEDOT (sigma(rt) = 20-80 S/cm) reveals a slight thermal activation. It can be further increased by a factor of 2 by doping with iodine. Using this approach, thin films of PEDOT with conductivity as high as 20 S/cm were fabricated on insulating flexible plastic surfaces.

A one-step synthesis of a poly(iptycene) through an unusual Diels-Alder cyclization/dechlorination of tetrachloropentacene.

We have discovered the first reaction of a substituted pentacene molecule as a dienophile. A surprisingly clean Diels-Alder self-coupling of Cl4Pn leads to a novel ladder polymer, poly(iptycene), which can be converted to a conducting carbon at relatively low temperature (600-900 degrees C). Theoretical calculations of the former reaction suggest a biradical asymmetric mechanism, despite highly symmetric reactants.

A (pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene)-fluorene conjugate. Unusual electrochemistry and charge transfer properties: the first observation of a covalent D(2+)-sigma-A(.-) redox state(1).

The synthesis of novel electrochemically amphoteric TTFAQ-sigma-A compounds (TTFAQ = 9,10-bis(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene, sigma = saturated spacer, A = polynitrofluorene acceptor) is reported. Their solution redox behavior is characterized by three single-electron reduction and one two-electron oxidation waves. Electrochemical quasireversibility of the TTFAQ(2+) state and a low E(ox) - E(red) gap ( approximately 0.25 V) for 3-(9-dicyanomethylene-4,5,7-trinitrofluorene-2-sulfonyl)-propionic acid 2-[10-(4,5-dimethyl-[1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracen-9-ylidene]-5-methyl-[1,3]dithiol-4-ylmethyl ester (10) has enabled the electrochemical generation of the hitherto unknown transient D(2+)-sigma-A(.-) state as observed in cyclic voltammetry and time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry. The ground state of compound 10 was shown to be ionic in the solid but is essentially neutral in solution (according to electron paramagnetic resonance). The X-ray structure of an intermolecular 1:2 complex between 2-[2,7-bis(2-hydroxyethoxy)-9,10-bis(4,5-dimethyl-[1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene and 2,5,7-trinitro-4-bromo-9-dicyanomethylenefluorene, 14.(17)(2), reveals, for the first time, full electron transfer in a fluorene charge-transfer complex.

Engineering a remarkably low HOMO-LUMO gap by covalent linkage of a strong pi-donor and a pi-acceptor--tetrathiafulvalene-sigma-polynitrofluorene diads: their amphoteric redox behavior, electron transfer and spectroscopic properties.

Novel R3TTF-sigma-A compounds 14, 16 and 19 (R3TTF = trial-kyletrathiafulvalene, sigma = saturated spacer, A = polynitrofluoren-9-dicyano-methylene acceptor) incorporating very strong donor and acceptor moieties have been synthesized by condensation of the corresponding R3TTF-sigma-fluoren-9-one diads with malononitrile. Reversible five-step amphoteric redox behavior has been observed with an extremely low HOMO-LUMO gap (approximately 0.3 eV). For compound 14 a strong EPR signal is observed in the solid state, ascribed to intermolecular complexation: a less intense signal is seen in solution, corresponding to ca. 2% of the molecules existing in a radical form at room temperature. Intramolecular charge transfer in diads 14 and 16 is manifested in strong absorption bands in the near-IR region of their electronic spectra. Spectroelectrochemical data reveal marked electrochromic behavior in the visible and near-IR region of both compounds. The first X-ray crystal structure of a fluorene radical-anion salt is reported, namely the copper salt of 2,4,5,7-tetranitro-9- dicyanomethylenefluorene (1:1 stoichiometry).
