Analytical time-dependent density functional derivative methods within the RI-J approximation, an approach to excited states of large molecules.

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is now well established as an efficient method for molecular excited state treatments. In this work, we introduce the resolution of the identity approximation for the Coulomb energy (RI-J) to excited state gradient calculations. In combination with nonhybrid functionals, the RI-J approximation leads to speed ups in total timings of an order of magnitude compared to the conventional method; this is demonstrated for oligothiophenes with up to 40 monomeric units and adamantane clusters. We assess the accuracy of the computed adiabatic excitation energies, excited state structures, and vibrational frequencies on a set of 36 excited states. The error introduced by the RI-J approximation is found to be negligible compared to deficiencies of standard basis sets and functionals. Auxiliary basis sets optimized for ground states are suitable for excited state calculations with small modifications. In conclusion, the RI-J approximation significantly extends the scope of applications of analytical TDDFT derivative methods in photophysics and photochemistry.

Synthesis and stereochemical properties of chiral square complexes of iron(II).

The hexadentate, and ditopic ligand 2,5-bis([2,2']bipyridin-6-yl)pyrazine yields a chiral, tetrameric, square-shaped, self-assembled species upon complexation with Fe2+ ions. The racemate of this complex was resolved with antimonyl tatrate as the chiral auxiliary. The purity of the enantiomer was determined by NMR spectroscopy, by using a chiral, diamagnetic shift reagent, and by circular dichroism (CD). The CD spectrum was also calculated by time-dependent density functional theory, and the correlation that was found between CD spectrum and configuration was confirmed by X-ray cristallography. When a "chiralised" version of the ligand was used instead, the corresponding iron complex was obtained in diastereomerically pure form.

Photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer in 4-(dimethyl)aminobenzonitrile--a theoretical perspective.

Recent advances in time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) have led to computational methods that can predict properties of photoexcited molecules with satisfactory accuracy at comparably moderate cost. We apply these methods to study the photophysics and photochemistry of 4-(dimethyl)aminobenzonitrile (DMABN). DMABN is considered the paradigm of photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), leading to dual fluorescence in polar solvents. By comparison of calculated emission energies, dipole moments, and vibrational frequencies with recent results from transient spectroscopy measurements, a definitive assignment of the electronic and geometric structure of the two lowest singlet excited states of DMABN is possible for the first time. We investigate the mechanism of the ICT reaction by means of minimum energy path calculations. The results confirm existing state-crossing models of dual fluorescence. Our study suggests that analytical TDDFT derivative methods will be useful to predict and classify emissive properties of other donor-acceptor systems as well.
