The adherence by three strains of Staphylococcus intermedius to corneocytes collected from healthy dogs was compared to the adherence to corneocytes collected from the inflamed (erythematous) and noninflamed (normal appearing) skin of dogs suffering from atopic dermatitis. All three strains of S. intermedius adhered in greater numbers to corneocytes from both inflamed and noninflamed atopic skin than to corneocytes from healthy dogs. Adherence was greatest to corneocytes from inflamed atopic skin but one strain showed no statistical difference for adherence to inflamed and noninflamed atopic skin. These findings suggest that S. intermedius adheres extensively to both inflamed and noninflamed canine atopic skin. This may be important in the colonization of atopic skin by this microorganism. Strain variation in the ability of S. intermedius to adhere to canine atopic corneocytes is probable.
Oral administration of altrenogest for oestrus suppression in competition horses is believed to be widespread in some equestrian disciplines, and can be administered continuously for several months during a competition season. To examine whether altrenogest has any anabolic or other potential performance enhancing properties that may give a horse an unfair advantage, we examined the effect of oral altrenogest (0.044 mg/kg), given daily for a period of eight weeks, on social hierarchy, activity budget, body-mass and body condition score of 12 sedentary mares. We concluded that prolonged oral administration of altrenogest at recommended dose rates to sedentary mares resulted in no effect on dominance hierarchies, body mass or condition score.

Bovine rectal palpation is a necessary skill for a veterinary student to learn. However, lack of resources and welfare issues currently restrict the amount of training available to students in this procedure. Here we present a virtual reality based teaching tool -- the Bovine Rectal Palpation Simulator -- that has been developed as a supplement to existing training methods. When using the simulator, the student palpates virtual objects representing the bovine reproductive tract, receiving feedback from a PHANToM haptic device (inside a fibreglass model of a cow), while the teacher follows the student's actions on the monitor and gives instruction. We present a validation experiment that compares the performance of a group of traditionally trained students with a group whose training was supplemented with a simulator training session. The subsequent performance in the real task, when examining cows for the first time, was assessed with the results showing a significantly better performance for the simulator group.
Detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 organisms in food, clinical or environmental samples is necessary for diagnosis of infection and epidemiological investigations. However, this pathogen may be present in low numbers and difficult to identify among high numbers of other background bacteria. In order to increase the sensitivity of culture- and PCR detection, pre-enrichment of E. coli O157:H7 in broth culture combined with ImmunoMagnetic cell Separation (IMS) is routinely employed. These methods, although able to detect levels as low as 2 cfu/g (from 10 to 25 g samples), are qualitative detection strategies only. If the actual numbers of E. coli O157:H7 are to be quantified, growth enrichment must be excluded and the organisms isolated directly from the sample of interest. Such quantification is necessary, for example, to determinate contamination levels on beef carcasses and for determination of bacterial numbers in in vivo gene expression studies. In the present study, it was not possible to recover organisms from bovine faecal suspensions using the customary IMS system and so a range of alternative buffers and other paramagnetic beads was tested. Combination of a 6.2-microm diameter bead with a detergent-based buffer gave optimal recovery of E. coli O157:H7 organisms from faecal suspensions. This system was validated for recovery of E. coli O157:H7 by comparing it with that obtained with the standard Dynabeads IMS protocol, using both the traditional broth enrichment method and a quantitative detection approach. We conclude that a 6.2-microm diameter Aureon bead can be used for quantitative isolation of E. coli O157:H7 directly from bovine faeces and, for this purpose, is preferred to the 2.8-microm diameter Dynal bead.
