Improved performance in dye-sensitized solar cells employing TiO2 photoelectrodes coated with metal hydroxides.

The performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) was compared before and after processing the TiO(2) electrodes by minute-order electrochemical reactions with metal nitrates, where the metals were Mg, Zn, Al, and La, in 2-propanol. An overcoating of metal hydroxide was formed without the need for a sintering process, and magnesium hydroxide was found to give the largest improvement in photovoltage, fill factor, and eventually overall conversion efficiency of the DSCs. To analyze the nature of the improvement, the diffusion coefficient (D) and electron lifetime (tau) were determined. While little influence of overcoating on D was seen, a correlation between the increase in tau and V(oc) was observed for the metals examined here. The remarkable improvement in the electron lifetime of the DSCs suggests that an overcoating with magnesium hydroxide species function as the blocking layers at the fluorine-doped tin oxide and TiO(2) interfaces, thus contributing to the suppression of electron leakage, i.e., recombination processes between unidirectional transporting electrons and poly-iodides such as tri-iodide in the processed TiO(2) photoelectrode systems. The increase in V(oc) can be explained by the increased electron density caused by the increase in electron lifetime.

Doped colloidal photonic crystal structure with refractive index chirping to the [111] crystallographic axis.

A three-dimensionally ordered array of close-packed colloidal spheres, a photonic crystal structure in which the refractive index of the medium interstitial lattice in a colloidal crystal spatially changes in the [111] crystallographic axis, is demonstrated. The colloidal photonic crystal structure with refractive index chirping was produced by infiltration of a monomer and organic dopants with a high refractive index into a silica opal, followed by interfacial gel polymerization. The resulting photonic crystal structure has a gradually varying stop band at each different (111) plane in the face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure at a normal incidence. This novel structure exhibited optical characteristics that have band-gap broadening by the superposition of stop bands at each plane of the crystal with different dielectric functions. Moreover, the refractive index perturbation in the [111] fcc opal also showed a defect state within a pseudo-photonic band gap. This new type of photonic crystal structure should be useful for the band-gap engineering of photonic-band-gap materials.

Colloid lithography-induced polydimethylsiloxane microstructures and their application to cell patterning.

Colloidal lithography was used to make a novel array (2-D) of micro-rings, dots, and interconnected-honeycomb structures. These geometries are controlled using the curing temperature-dependent rheological properties of the siloxane elastomer precursor. Serratia marcescens was patterned on the interconnected honeycomb microstructure demonstrating a potential application for microbioanalytical devices, microfluidics, and bio-micro-electromechanical systems.

Synthesis of two types of nanoparticles in polyelectrolyte capsule nanoreactors and their dual functionality.

Polyelectrolyte multilayer capsule reactors (PEMCRs) for the synthesis of two types of nanoparticles were prepared. The tunable PEMCRs containing two different functional groups that can be used to synthesize two types of nanoparticles simultaneously and to control the composition of two types of nanoparticles within the shell of PEMCs. These PEMCRs enabled the composition as well as the amount of the loaded two types of nanoparticles within the shell of PEMCs to be controlled by the copolymer ratio and the number of reaction cycles. Another interesting finding is that, as a result of the synthesis of two types of nanoparticles, these specially designed PEMCs containing both silver and goethite nanocrystals can be used as antimicrobial capsules, which can move by an external magnetic field. Such a technology has the potential for use in sterilization at the desirable sites.

Synthesis of a double spiro-polyindenofluorene with a stable blue emission.

[reaction: see text] A novel polyindenofluorene containing a double spiro-anthracene structure with solublizing alkyl groups was synthesized. Enhanced spectral stability of the polymer was investigated by heat treatment and photoirradiation in air. The EL spectrum of the polymer showed an enhanced sensitivity to the human eye and good color purity as a blue-emitting material.

Photoinduced supramolecular chirality in amorphous azobenzene polymer films.

Supramolecular chirality was optically induced in amorphous and achiral azobenzene polymer films by irradiation of a laser beam with elliptical polarization. The chirality resulted from helical orientation of azobenzene chromophores by a combined process of circular and linear polarization. The helix-handedness could be controlled by incident light-handedness.
