[Toxicologic characteristics and hygienic standardization of the levels of sodium hydrocarbonate and potassium carbonate in the air of the work area].

Toxicity and hazards of sodium hydrocarbonate (SH) and potassium carbonate (PC) were experimentally assessed. Both substances caused impairments of electrolytic equilibrium, protein metabolism, changes of functional and biochemical indicators of the cardiovascular system, etc. LD50 of SH for white rats constituted 9940 +/- 350 mg/kg, for mice 3360 +/- 210 mg/kg and of PC 2980 +/- 142 and 2570 +/- 142 mg/kg, respectively. The authors failed to define mean lethal concentrations of both substances. The following threshold values Limac were established at 74 mg/m3 for SH and at 54 mg/m3 for PC. Limch was respectively 14.9 and 4.7 mg/m3. MAC for SH was established at 5 mg/m3 and for PC at 2 mg/m3.

[Clinico-neurologic criteria for different degrees of alcoholic intoxication].

As a result of a cliniconeurological study of 500 people in a state of alcoholic intoxication of the I--II degrees and 100 sober people, certain clinical indices were elaborated to establish the degree of alcoholic intoxication. These indices are as follows: the existence of alcohol odour, changed speech, inadequate to the situation behaviour pupil dilatation, akrocyanosis, a sharp drop or absence of Achilles (tendon) and abdominal reflexes, a changed gait; the results of the study of "sensitized" Romberg's test, Tachen's test, handwriting test and the use of the Schulte tables. In order to identify the degree of alcoholic intoxication, as the frequency analysis demonstrated, there should be 4--5 signs of the above mentioned symptoms in the examinee.

[Rational use of antibiotics is the basis of their effectiveness and safety].

Many-year studies on the use of antibiotics in the general medical practice are summarized in the paper. The present trends in further improvement of the rational use of antibiotics are presented. It is shown that the present rational and safe antibiotic therapy is determined by 3 main factors: (1) choice of the drug with due regard for its pharmacological properties and spectrum, (2) isolation, identification and determination of the bacterial flora sensitivity to the antibiotic, (3) revealing or prevention of high sensitivity of the patients to the antibiotics chosen.
