Subpopulations of cytogenetically abnormal cells in fibroblast cultures derived from workers exposed to mineral oil.

Fibroblast cultures were grown from skin biopsy specimens from individuals with a high risk of cancer due to occupational exposure to mineral oil. A high frequency of chromosomally abnormal fibroblast subpopulations was found in cultures derived from tissue that had been exposed to the carcinogen, but these aberrant clonal populations were also present in control lines from the same individuals. Abnormal clones formed a greater proportion of the total cell population in the lines derived from the oil-exposed tissue compared with the control lines after a comparable time in culture. This difference in clone size may be a consequence of the in vivo exposure to mineral oil or other environmental agents.

Familial Behcet's syndrome.

Behcet's syndrome is reported in two families (one English and the other Egyptian). A mother and two of her sons of the English family and two brothers of the Egyptian family are described. The contradictory opinions concerning the incidence of the familial occurrence of this syndrome are partly due to uncertainty about the nosologic relationship of recurrent aphthal and Behcet's syndrome. The question of whether this syndrome should be included in a large group of aphthoses or be regarded as a true clinical entity is discussed.

Sociological implications of an epidemiological study of eczema in the City of Birmingham.

An epidemiological study has been made of 4696 cases of eczematous dermatitis referred to hospital outpatient clinics in the City of Birmingham over a 3-year period. Some sociological implications of the investigation are discussed. The need for further sociological accounts of skin disease is stressed.
