[Prognostic value of the expression of thyreoglobulin and oncomarkers (p53, EGFR, ret-oncogene) in different types of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid: clinicomorphological and immunohistochemical studies].

The surgical material obtained from 57 patients was immunohistochemically studied. Immunohistochemistry with quantitative and semiquantitative analyses of the results of test was used to define the expression of oncomarkers p53, EGRF, ret-oncogene, and thyreoglobulin. The expression of thyreoglobulin, EGRF, and ret-oncogene reflects the malignant potential of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid and and may be recommended as a predictive marker. The low expression of thyreoglobulin and the high expression of p53 and ret-oncogene are markers of a poor prognosis and tumor recurrence. EGFR expression is not of predictive value. MB3 proposed by the authors may be recommended for the determination of the malignant potential of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid.

[Synthesis and distribution of oncoproteins in tumor tissue].

Expression of myc, fos, src, ras and sis oncoproteins was studied in biopsy material of tumors, metastases and "normal" surrounding tissues from patients with different histological types of stomach and lung cancer, melanoma and other malignancy using immunoblotting. Besides, the immunohistochemical distribution of these oncoproteins under lung cancer and precancer conditions was analysed. The oncoproteins expression was significantly higher in cancer as compared with precancer and "normal' surrounding tissues. C-myc and c-fos gene products were detected in all the malignant tissues irrespectively to histogenesis of tumors, while the level of c-myc expression was rather high. The high level of c-fos expression was observed in stomach carcinomas and at early stages of lung tumor progression. C-src and c-sis genes expression varied in tumors of different histogenesis. C-src proteins were found in 60% of lung cancer but it was practically absent in stomach carcinomas and in melanomas. C-sis gene product was observed in some melanomas and lung carcinomas. Ras gene can be activated at early stages of tumor progression of stomach carcinomas and lung adenocarcinomas and at later stages of tumor progression in melanomas and small-cell lung carcinomas. Thus, there are some correlations between oncoprotein expression and tumor tissue histogenesis and progression.

[Digital processing and densitometry of tomograms in central lung cancer].

Additional information on an x-ray picture of peribronchial changes in tumorous and non-tumorous lesions of the lungs were obtained in 54 patients (40 with bronchogenic, mostly central cancer and 14 with chronic inflammatory diseases) in order to study roentgenological symptomatology before and after computerized processing of tomographic images using a method of linear filtration. Image processing with the measurement of densitometric indicators provides additional information for the estimation of bronchial affection by tumor infiltration. The same method can be of value for the detection of early signs of lung cancer in patients with peribronchial changes of obscure etiology.

[Roentgenologic characteristics of small bronchoalveolar cancer of the lung under conditions of image processing using linear filtration (roentgenomorphologic comparison)].

X-ray and morphological signs were compared in 50 patients with histologically verified bronchioloalveolar cancer (BAC). Particular attention was drawn to a study of an x-ray picture after computer processing of a tomographic image using a special technique. The most characteristic x-ray signs of BAC were subpleural localization, the presence of a fragmented scar in a tumor, and ill defined outlines. The peculiarities of an x-ray picture of small-size BAC were determined by the morphological structure of a tumor, a degree of its differentiation that could be detected in most cases only after image processing by the linear filtration technique.

[Nuclear oncoprotein expression in lung precancer and cancer at various stages of tumor progression studies at the level of light- and electron-immunohistochemistry].

68 cases of lung carcinoma, 3 carcinoids and 15 fibrosing alveolitis with foci of adenomatosis and bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma were studied. Oncoproteins c-fos, c-jun, c-ets-1, c-myc L and L-myc were identified in the tumour and surrounding tissue. Expression of c-fos was revealed in 79 of 138(59.4%) of proliferative and dysplastic changes of lung epithelium; c-jun in 40 of 61 (65.6%), c-ets-1 in 22 of 41 (53.7%), c-myc in 41 of 96(42.7%) and L-myc in 15 of 61 (24.6%), mainly in altered bronchial epithelium with a positive reaction to the antibodies against neuron specific enolase and S100 protein. More pronounced expression of nuclear oncoproteins, heterogeneity of their location in tissues, frequent cytoplasmic location in tumour cells were typical for lung carcinoma.

[Expression and co-expression of cellular oncogenes in the course of tumor progression in neuroendocrine lung tumors].

The tumours studied were as follows: benign carcinoids, well differentiated carcinomas (atypical carcinoids) and poorly differentiated tumours (small-cell carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation). Oncoproteins c-myc, c-fos, c-jun, L-myc, c-sis, c-ras, c-src, c-ets-1, c-met were studied immunohistochemically in the material obtained from 25 patients during the operations. A higher expression of c-fos, c-jun, c-ets-1 and c-met is observed at early stages of progression and that of c-myc and L-myc at later stages. Enhancement of c-myc and L-myc expression correlated with the invasiveness and lymphogenic metastasizing. Co-expression and negative correlation between some oncogenes are established. The data obtained may be used for prognosis and therapy.

[Intrauterine mycoplasmosis combined with bilateral adrenal ganglioneuroblastoma].

The paper reports lethal intrauterine mycoplasmosis in a newborn girl. Her mother suffered from genital mycoplasmosis and had blood antibodies to Myc. Hominis and Ureapl. urealyticum. Most pronounced changes are found in the liver: hepatocyte degeneration and necrosis with PAS- and azur-positive granules in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes and macrophages, lymphohistiocytic infiltration of portal tracts and parenchyma, biliary duct proliferation, cholestases. The lungs: interstitial pneumonia with minimal alteration of the bronchial epithelium. The above spectrum of alterations suggests transplacental contamination. Ganglioneuroblastoma consisting of embryonal neuroblasts found in the adrenals is considered as an independent disease. The first child of this woman died 14-days old and had morphological signs of the intrauterine infection and pronounced liver dysplasia; possible oncogenicity of mycoplasma is discussed.

[Fibrosing alveolitis--current aspects of the problem].

Review of the literature and author's data on the etiology, pathogenesis and morphogenesis of fibrosing alveolitis (FA) which is a stereotype manifestation of the majority of lung interstitial diseases is presented. FA is characterized by an acute or chronic, focal or diffuse non-purulent inflammation of the interstitium of respiratory lung areas resulting in interstitial fibrosis. FA early stage is characterized by an exudative-productive inflammation, the late stage -by sclerotic changes resulting in a block of the aero-hematic barrier and development of the respiratory failure and hypoxia. A leading role in FA morphogenesis belongs to the cell cooperation including alveolar macrophages, T-lymphocytes, fibroblasts and not infrequently polynuclear leukocytes. Alveolar macrophage is able not only to participate in the cell defence of lung tissue but to exert damaging sclerogenic effect as well. Nosological features of different interstitial lung diseases are better presented at an early stage of FA and are levelled in lung fibrosis progression.

[Nature of pseudo-amyloid masses in lymphocytic pneumonitis].

The material of open lung biopsies from a female patient with lymphocytic pneumonitis affecting mainly lower parts of the lungs was studied light- and electron-microscopically, immunohistochemically. Diffuse lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with an admixture of macrophages, single giant multinuclear cells and pseudo-amyloid inclusions were found. Morphogenesis of pseudo-amyloid inclusions is related to processes of pulmonary fibro-atelectasis with subsequent imbibition by immunoglobulins (hyperglobulinemia was found in circulating blood).
