Tunable nonlocal spin control in a coupled-quantum dot system.

The effective interaction between magnetic impurities in metals that can lead to various magnetic ground states often competes with a tendency for electrons near impurities to screen the local moment (known as the Kondo effect). The simplest system exhibiting the richness of this competition, the two-impurity Kondo system, was realized experimentally in the form of two quantum dots coupled through an open conducting region. We demonstrate nonlocal spin control by suppressing and splitting Kondo resonances in one quantum dot by changing the electron number and coupling of the other dot. The results suggest an approach to nonlocal spin control that may be relevant to quantum information processing.

Effect of St. John's wort on free radical production.

St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is an herbal compound used in the treatment of burns, bruises, swelling, anxiety, and most recently, mild to moderate depression. The present study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant properties of St. John's wort in both cell-free and human vascular tissue. The experiment was performed initially in a cell-free system using Krebs buffer and a combination of xanthine/xanthine oxidase to initiate the production of the superoxide radical. Additionally, human placental vein was incubated in Krebs buffer without xanthine or xanthine oxidase to study the effects of St. John's wort on human tissue in vitro. Commercially available formulations of St. John's wort, standardized to either hypericin or hyperforin, were dissolved in an alkaline solution, and the following dilutions were made: 1:1, 1:2.5, 1:5, 1:7.5, 1:10, and 1:20. Lucigenin chemiluminescence was used to measure free radical production in both systems. A pro-oxidant effect was seen at the highest concentration, 1:1. Lower concentrations revealed antioxidant properties of the compound. All dilutions below 1:1 in both systems showed a dose-related inverse relationship of superoxide inhibition. The largest suppression was seen at the most dilute concentration, 1:20. The addition of 10(-3) M tiron inhibited the chemiluminescence signal, thereby confirming the production of superoxide. The results of this study suggest that St. John's wort inhibits free radical production in both cell-free and human vascular tissue.

The effects of a computer-assisted reminder system on patient compliance with recommended health maintenance procedures.

In June of 1993 we implemented a computer-assisted reminder system in the outpatient clinic of an 18 resident family practice training program. The system notifies both patients and physicians of recommended health maintenance procedures. In the 22 months following implementation we documented a rapid increase in physician and patient compliance with several disease screening and prevention services. Despite high physician compliance, we were unable to increase patient compliance rates above 70% for any procedure. At the end of the study period patient compliance varied from a low of 26.7% for sigmoidoscopy to a high of 61.7% for pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination. We feel this study has important implications for the US Public Health Service's preventive services screening goals for the year 2000.
