[Functional characteristics of peripheral blood erythrocytes in cancer patients].

Cytophotometric (sulfhydryl groups and lipoproteins) and interferometric (dry mass) studies of the peripheral blood erythrocytes were carried out in 94 untreated patients with tumors of different localization (lung cancer, tumors of the head and neck, gastric cancer, and cancer of the large intestine). Control group consisted of healthy volunteers. The concentrations of sulfhydryl groups, lipoproteins, and mean values of dry mass of red cells of the patients with tumors were reliably lower than those in healthy controls. The degree of changes in the studied parameters depended on the tumor localization.

[Treatment of short esophageal stricture in children].

The authors find it necessary to identify a nosological entity of short esophageal strictures, up to 1.5-2.0 cm long, from the specific features of their formation, clinical manifestations and from the possibility of widely using transesophageal methods of treatment. Among them, a procedure for intraesophageal compression of the scarring ring by using two types of devices in 64 patients was analysed. There was a positive result in 86% of the patients. The remaining children underwent surgical interventions: resection of an esophageal portion with esophagus-esophagus anastomosis and colesophagoplasty. No deaths were recorded. To objectivize the indications for either method of treatment, the authors recommend esophageal NMR tomography.

[Serological diagnosis of tuberculosis in children by using erythrocyte preparations].

The results of indirect hemagglutination with phosphatide and protein antigens in children with different manifestations of primary Tb infection point to a high diagnostic potential of the serological method. Specially designed and tested diagnostic preparations made of TB and BCG vaccine strain tuberculin can perfect the diagnosis of tuberculosis and determination of its activity. Employment of the erythrocytic diagnosticum with BCG tuberculin extends the potential of detecting postvaccinal complications in children immunized with BCG vaccine.

[Clinico-immunologic aspects of the differential diagnosis of disseminated processes in the lungs].

The results of examination of 224 patients with newly detected disseminated processes in the lungs who were admitted for differential diagnosis are presented. Immunologic studies which include determination of the natural killer activity, neutrophil phagocytosis, a total number of T- and B-lymphocytes and synthesis of antituberculosis antibodies in the indirect hemagglutination reaction with three basic M. tuberculosis antigens (phosphatide, polysaccharide and tuberculin) proved to be of high diagnostic value. Immunologic tests used along with clinical studies allowed timely diagnosis of disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis in 62 patients, the disseminated forms of lung sarcoidosis in 115 and nonspecific diseases (microfocal pneumonias of a protracted character, pneumoconioses carcinomatoses, etc.) in 57 patients.

[Clinical picture and localization of foci of softening in the brain following vertebral artery thrombosis].

The authors conducted a clinico-anatomical analysis of 45 observations with thrombosis of the vertebral arteries. In the majority of cases thrombosis of the vertebral arteries was isolated. In 5 observations it was combined--with thrombosis of the carotid artery (2 cases), with the middle brain artery (2 cases) and with the posterior cerebellum artery (1 case). In one observation thrombosis of the right innominate, subclavian, general carotid and vertebral arteries was diagnosed clinically and angiographically. Thrombosis of the vertebral arteries occurs in the presence of expressed atherosclerotic changes in the brain vessels with acute stenosis.

[Thrombotic lesions of the superior and inferior posterior cerebellar arteries].

The authors accomplished a clinico-anatomical analysis of 8 personal cases of a rare vascular brain pathology. In 1 case there was a thrombembolism in the basin of fine branches of the right upper cerebellar artery with a focus of softening in the right hemisphere of the cerebellum in 1 case--thrombosis of the right upper cerebellar artery with a focus of softening in the right cerebellar hemisphere, in 5 -- thrombosis of the left lower posterior cerebellar artery with localization of the focus of softening in the left cerebellar hemisphere. One case was with thrombosis of the same vessel with a focus of softening in the right cerebellar hemisphere in the side olive of medulla oblongata.
