A total of 74 patients with suspected discal hernia were studied. To clarify its diagnosis, epidural scintigraphy along with routine studies was used. The established diagnosis was verified during surgery. Carbonic acid laser was applied to 22 patients in addition to the conventional procedures.
During 1972-1990 twelve patients with tumors of the diaphragm were operated upon. Age of the patients was from 39 to 60 years. Nine patients had benign tumors and cysts, 3 patients had malignant tumors. Exact nosological diagnosis before operation was not made. Topical diagnostic errors were either due to incomplete volume of examinations or to a refusal of using special roentgen contrast methods.
Ninety-eight patients with a suspected spinal volumetric process were examined and treated. In addition to the routine examinations, modified myeloscintigraphy was performed in 48 patients in order to make an accurate diagnosis and to define process sites. Filling defect was the most common myeloscintigraphic symptom. This symptom was detected in 31 patients with spinal tumors and in 10 patients with another abnormality of the vertebral canal. Myeloscintigraphy was found to be of particular value in the diagnosis of spinal tumors. The technique allows minimum-size formations to be diagnosed even when there are no evidence for subarachnoidal space block.
In massive blood loss (1000-4900 ml) during operations on the kidneys, urinary tract and prostate in 65 patients 750 to 3600 ml of blood were reinfused. Sixty (92.3%) patients recovered. Fatal outcomes in 5 cases were caused by complications of the underlying and concomitant diseases and were unrelated to blood reinfusion. Study of morphological, biochemical and coagulation properties of the patients' blood showed gradual restoration of hemostatic values and the absence of harmful effect of the reinfusion on the organism. The authors claim that blood reinfusion can be undertaken in operations on the kidney, urinary tract and prostate when there are vital indications. Kidney tumors are a relative contraindication for reinfusion. Blood reinfusion is not indicated in purulent diseases of the kidneys.
