The foot at risk: identification and prevention of skin breakdown.
This article presents the major predisposing factors and measures associated with preventing nosocomial foot lesions. The combination of nursing interventions and the appropriate use of protective devices can markedly reduce the incidence of foot lesions acquired in the hospital. Patient and family education is another important aspect in preventing skin breakdown of the foot at risk.
Development of a patient education program for new amputees.
In this article, the authors describe how the needs of the patient with a new amputation were assessed and how behavioral objectives were developed for an educational program that would address the knowledge, motor skills, and attitudes necessary for self-care. Two teaching techniques are described. An evaluation process that identifies the patient's or family's achievement of the objectives is discussed.
Helping the patient through the experience of an amputation.
Due to the complications of diabetes mellitus or peripheral vascular disease, the older adult may face the experience of amputation. The patient with an amputation and the family will need psychologic support as well as information about preoperative and postoperative concerns and education in the knowledge and skills needed for rehabilitation and selfcare. The nurse plays a key role by providing the necessary information, emotional support, and education. Continuity of care throughout the experience is critical so that the patient and family can adjust to the amputation and the patient can again become an active member of society.
