The involvement of cytochrome P450 system in the fate of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in European eel [Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758)].

TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene) was the most common nitro aromatic explosive available in World War II ammunitions. The presence of ordnance dumped at sea might represent a great concern for marine species living close to dumping sites and the toxicological properties of the chemicals released into the marine environments need to be evaluated. The aim of the present study is to investigate the involvement of CYP (cytochrome P450) system in the metabolism of TNT in marine organisms by using the European eel [Anguilla anguilla (Linnaeus, 1758)] as model species. In vivo exposure to sublethal concentration of TNT (0.5, 1 and 2.5 mg/l) leads to a significant decrease in the phase I CYP1A catalytic activities such as EROD (7-ethoxyresorufin-O-de-ethylase) and MROD (7-methoxyresorufin-O-de-ethylase). On the opposite, a significant increase in NADPH cytochrome c reductase activity as well as phase II UDP-glucuronosyltransferase activity is observed. An inhibition at enzyme level is hypothesized for both CYP1A enzymes, also confirmed by a similar decrease observed after in vitro exposure. An active role of NADPH cytochrome c reductase and phase II enzymes in the TNT metabolism may also be hypothesized.

[Pancreatic changes associated with acute gastroenteritis].

A retrospective study is discussed, in which the disorder of pancreatic enzymes in hospitalized patients because of an acute infectious gastroenteritis is analyzed. Of 30 cases, 15 showed a raise in lipase levels, being over 1,000 IU in five of them. There was no associated raise in amylase levels. Patients with high lipase levels did not show more fever, leucocytosis nor disorders on the hepatic enzymes, in comparison with those patients with normal lipase levels. Mean age was slightly lower in patients with high lipase levels than in those with normal lipase. Chronic diseases are not a predisposing factor to suffer pancreatic complications in patients with gastroenteritis. There was no case with intense abdominal pain which would suggest a pancreatitis, and a raise in lipase did not modify the evolution of the gastroenteritis.

[Inferior vena cava obstruction syndrome caused by urinary retention].

OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual case of inferior vena cava obstruction secondary to urinary retention. METHODS/RESULTS: A 72-year-old male patient with a history of bilateral inguinal hernia and a recent hip surgery, presented with deep venous thrombosis in the left leg. A CT scan disclosed significant thickening of the bladder wall and grade III-IV hypertrophy of the prostate. Abdominal ultrasound disclosed a cystic mass compressing the vena cava and moderate ureterohydronephrosis. Edema spontaneously resolved following insertion of a urethral catheter and renal function returned to normal. CONCLUSION: Obstruction of the inferior vena cava secondary to an enlarged bladder is rare. To our knowledge only two such cases have been reported in the literature. In the case described herein, urinary retention may have been exacerbated by prostatic hypertrophy, anesthesia and bed confinement due to hip surgery.
