[Effect of air pollutants on the health of the Annaberg district population with special reference to acute respiratory tract diseases].

From 1978 to 1988 in the district of Annaberg (Saxony, state frontier to Czechoslovakia) investigations were accomplished to assess the state of health in people living there. The southern part of the district rises to a crest (Saxon Ore Mountain). It is influenced by air pollution from Northern Bohemia. The incidence of acute infections of the upper airways showed a remarkable dependence on the degree of air pollution in the age groups up to 18 years, especially in the group of infants. In the polluted area (high overload) the morbidity of infants was 7-fold in relation to the unpolluted area of the district. In the polluted area when temperature was lower than -5 degrees C the incidence of acute respiratory infections in infants closely correlated (r = 0.90) with the concentration of SO2 in ambient air. In the town Annaberg (urban air pollution) the frequency of absence of children from school caused by acute respiratory infections was elvated in relation to the rural parts of the district, but there were no differences among these rural parts. In the polluted area the severe stages of cardiorespiratory diseases were passed through with evident acceleration. In healthy adults living there the mean values for immunoglobulins of class A and class M tended to be elevated, and in school children the antibody titers against influenza A and B were increased.

[Error possibilities in the analysis of sedimentation dust].

The designation of sedimentation dust and its contents of trace elements is submitted to an critical reflection of errors. Essential falsifications of the analytic results can be produced by the use of dust-laying deionized or distilled water, the material of vessels, the anti-freeze agent, the different diameters of vessels apertures and the entry of foreign bodies. The possibilities of making less errors in analysis are being discussed and the feigned surface pollution is calculated.

[Evaluating the intake of heavy metals].

An environmental hygienic test model has been developed with Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn and Cr as examples, which allows to investigate the distribution and behaviour of the elements in biological cycles and to estimate the metal reception by humans. The model enables to calculate the mean reception of heavy metal per person for differently contaminated areas. The results demonstrate that the maximum tolerable intake, proposed by FAO/WHO, fell short of concerning Cd and Pb and that the supply with the other elements was sufficient in the population investigated.

[Massive skeletal fluorosis in compromised kidney function].

Report on an 86-year-old man with massive skeletal fluorosis. The disease arose during chronic exposure to fluorides from renal insufficiency caused by arteriosclerosis. The importance of knowing the renal functional parameters in cases of therapeutic use of fluorides is accentuated.

[Arsenic emission and effects on the biosphere].

In the GDR, the arsenic emission in the surroundings of metallurgical plants have been reduced to a minimum, the contamination of the soil being not yet diminished in some cases. In the framework of a comprehensive research program, it was shown that the uptake of arsenic by man via the food chain is possible in the area of activity of an arsenic emitter (due to increased arsenic content in the sedimentary dust), even if the maximum emission concentration of arsenic in the aerosol is considerably lower than the permanent limit value. Apart from local sources of emission (e.g. non-ferrous smelteries and phosphate works), the extended burden on the air by traces of arsenic originating from power station exhalates deserves increasing attention. In regions where industrial plants are concentrated, but also in regions with intensive agriculture and horticulture, it is recommendable to determine regularly the arsenic contents in the air, soil, vegetable feeding stuffs and vegetable foodstuffs.

[Heavy metal content of cereals and potatoes].

By means of atomic absorption spectrometry, the authors determined the cadmium, zinc, copper and manganese contents in potatoes and cereals from three territories differently burdened by heavy-metal immissions (rural region, overcrowded urban region, region with non-ferrous metal industry). Of these elements, cadmium was most enriched, followed (by a wide margin) by zinc and copper, whereas the manganese level was slightly higher in the burdened region II (compared to the burdened region I) and somewhat lower in the burdened region III. Compared to normal values (0.035--0.080 p.p.m.), i. e., values found in non-burdened regions, the cadmium contents were some 2- to 6-fold higher in air-dry samples of wheat, barley and rye from the burdened regions, some 30-fold higher in oats, and some 3- to 4-fold higher in potatoes (normal values, on a dry-weight basis, (0.140 p.p.m.). As to cereals, the zinc levels were, at the most, some 2-fold higher than the normal values (29--34 p.p.m.), the copper contents were, at the most, some 1.5-fold higher than the normal values (4.1 bis 4.8 p.p.m.), whereas the manganese levels (normal values, 14--30 p.p.m.) were less by half. In potatoes, the zinc contents were but slightly higher than the normal values (18.5 p.p.m., on a dry-weight basis), the copper levels (4.6 p.p.m., on a dry-weight basis) were some 2-fold higher, and the manganese contents (7.2 p.p.m., on a dry-weight basis) were somewhat reduced. On an average 26% (region with non-ferrous metal industry) or 13% (normal region) of the heavy metals are removable from potatoes by washing. On the basis of the results obtained and of data from the literature, an estimate is calculated for the expected values in territories differently burdened by heavy-metal immissions. Finally, targeted suggestions are given for preventing or impeding the entrance of heavy metals into the biocycle.

[Skeletal fluorosis in senility (author's transl)].

There are reported two cases of nonprofessional skeletal fluorosis in senility. Causes of origin, clinical and roentgenological picture, histology and bone fluoride contents are specified, the findings discussed in connection with sodium fluoride therapy of osteoporosis.

[Chromium--its community hygienic importance].

The present contribution is a literature survey of the presentday knowledge of the chromium contamination of the biosphere. It gives an insight into the absorption mechanism, accumulation and toxicity of chromium in man, and deals with its tolerance. Preliminary investigations into the chromium distribution and burden in the territory of the GDR are presented.
