An overview of the biology of the wharf borer beetle (Nacerdes melanura L., Oedemeridae) a pest of wood in marine structures.

The UK distribution of N. melanura is reported, based on records from museum collections, government laboratories and a field survey of wooden marine structures and driftwood along the English and Welsh coastlines. The global distribution is also reported, based on a questionnaire survey. The life cycle of the wharf borer under different environmental conditions is described and the environmental conditions over the adult emergence period presented. The cellulase complex, xylanase and a range of dissacharases were present in the larval digestive tract when tunnelling archaeological oak.

Five unique compounds: xyloketals from mangrove fungus Xylaria sp. from the South China Sea coast.

Five unique metabolites, xyloketals A (1), B (2), C (3), D (4), and E (5), and the known 6 were isolated from mangrove fungus Xylaria sp. (no. 2508), obtained from the South China Sea. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction experiments. Xyloketal A is a ketal compound with a C(3) symmetry and xyloketals B-E are its analogues. It was found that xytoketal C slowly rearranged to xytoketal B in DMSO-d(6)() solution at room temperature. Xyloketal A exhibited the activity of inhibiting acetylcholine esterase.

Eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids production by and okara-utilizing potential of thraustochytrids.

Nine thraustochytrid strains isolated from subtropical mangroves were screened for their eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) production potential in a glucose yeast extract medium. Their ability to utilize okara (soymilk residue) for growth and EPA and DHA production was also evaluated. EPA yield was low in most strains, while DHA level was high on glucose yeast extract medium, producing 28.1-41.1% of total fatty acids, for all strains, with the exception of Ulkenia sp. KF13. The DHA yield of Schizochytrium mangrovei strains ranged from 747.7 to 2778.9 mg/l after 52 h of fermentation at 25 degrees C. All strains utilized okara as a substrate for growth, but DHA yield was lower when compared with fermentation in a glucose yeast extract medium.

Stream biodiversity: the ghost of land use past.

The influence of past land use on the present-day diversity of stream invertebrates and fish was investigated by comparing watersheds with different land-use history. Whole watershed land use in the 1950s was the best predictor of present-day diversity, whereas riparian land use and watershed land use in the 1990s were comparatively poor indicators. Our findings indicate that past land-use activity, particularly agriculture, may result in long-term modifications to and reductions in aquatic diversity, regardless of reforestation of riparian zones. Preservation of habitat fragments may not be sufficient to maintain natural diversity in streams, and maintenance of such biodiversity may require conservation of much or all of the watershed.

Cell wall active antifungal compounds produced by the marine fungus hypoxylon oceanicum LL-15G256. I. Taxonomy and fermentation.

The cell wall targeted antifungal activity of Hypoxylon oceanicum LL-15G256 extracts resulted from the production of novel lipodepsipeptides and previously reported macrocyclic polylactones. In an optimized medium, titers of the lipodepsipeptide and the polylactones reached approximately 200-400 mg/liter and 25-50 mg/liter, respectively. The optimum fermentation temperature for production of 15G256 gamma was 28 degrees C. Seawater appeared to have an inhibitory effect on metabolite accumulation at lower fermentation temperatures.

Prophylactic anti-lipopolysaccharide freeze-dried plasma in major burns: a double blind controlled trial.

A double-blind controlled trial to test the efficacy of freeze-dried plasma containing a high titre of anti-lipopolysaccharide (anti-LPS) IgG in preventing or reducing sepsis in burns was carried out on 60 consecutive consenting adult burn victims with burns between 20 and 55 per cent of body surface area. Statistics failed to demonstrate a reduction in the mortality (P = 0.12) but did demonstrate a reduction in the incidence of burn wound infection (P = 0.0443), a fall in endotoxin levels in the first week (P = 0.041) and a rise in the anti-endotoxin levels after 5 units of anti-LPS plasma (P = 0.027). The logistics of carrying out such a trial are difficult but a larger patient population and modification of the original protocol might demonstrate a significant fall in mortality and morbidity. It was felt that some of the positive benefits of the high titre anti-LPS plasma might be due to factors other than the anti-LPS IgG.

Safety and efficacy of rectal prochlorperazine for the treatment of migraine in the emergency department.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of rectal prochlorperazine in the treatment of acute migraines. DESIGN: Randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study. SETTING: Emergency department of an inner-city university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: ED patients with documented diagnosis of migraines. INTERVENTIONS: Vital signs and level of alertness were monitored immediately before drug administration and 120 minutes after dosing. Pain intensity and adverse events were monitored immediately before drug administration and at 30, 60, and 120 minutes after dosing. RESULTS: A positive outcome was defined as a pain score less than or equal to 5 on a 10-point scale or a 50% reduction in pain intensity from baseline at 120 minutes after dosing. All patients treated with prochlorperazine suppositories experienced a positive treatment outcome; only 50% of patients treated with placebo experienced a positive result at 120 minutes after dosing (P = .016). Pain intensity scores were significantly lower in the prochlorperazine group at 120 minutes (P = .018). There were no adverse reactions in either group, and there were no significant differences in vital signs or levels of alertness between groups. Patients who failed therapy were given rescue medication 120 minutes after dosing. CONCLUSION: Prochlorperazine administered as a 25-mg rectal suppository provides excellent pain relief within 2 hours in patients with acute migraines.

Anatomical studies and five years clinical experience with the distally based medial fasciocutaneous flap of the lower leg.

Anatomical dissections, dye studies and clinical experience with the highly versatile inferiorly based medial lower leg fasciocutaneous flap, originally described by Amarante et al., have been described. Clinical uses include cover of the lower half of the tibia, foot and tendo achilles. Variations of the flap are described. The flap has been used in 42 clinical cases with only 2 failures and 2 partial failures. The dissection of the flap is quick and simple and the perforators reliable. The flap has obviated the need for a free flap in many of the cases, thus increasing the turnover in a busy unit. Dye injection studies and clinical experience have alerted us to the random nature of the flap in the proximal segment as described by Amarante. In high risk patients we modify the design.

Bacterial degradation of lignified wood cell walls in anaerobic aquatic habitats.

Test blocks of beech (Fagus sylvatica) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) were buried in fresh, brackish, and seawater anaerobic muds for periods ranging between 1 and 18 months. At appropriate time intervals the test blocks were recovered and examined for changes in weight and for bacterial attack of lignified wood cell walls. Only small weight losses occurred. Scanning electron microscopy studies revealed that there was extensive superficial bacterial erosion of beech wood cell walls. The decay patterns are illustrated by micrographs and discussed in relation to other types of bacterial attack.
