Autocrine regulation of murine B lymphocyte growth by an IgM antibody.

Culture supernatants of LPS-stimulated murine B lymphocytes are able to inhibit the growth of freshly isolated splenic B cells via an IgM antibody. The binding specificity of this IgM is not yet defined, but appears to be a B lymphocyte surface structure distinct from membrane immunoglobulin, MHC class II antigen, transferrin and Fc gamma receptors, and B220. The regulatory autoantibody allows the normal progression of early, but not late steps in the cycle of polyclonally-stimulated B lymphocytes and does not affect the increased antigen-presenting capacity of activated B cells. Therefore, this autoregulatory cycle is apparently ubiquitous and may be a major component of B lymphocyte homeostasis under physiological, as well as pathological conditions. Moreover, these findings bring into focus a possible regulating role of B lymphocytes in the humoral immune response.

Animals

[Experimental methods of creating V X 2 bone tumour in rabbits (author's transl)].

V X 2-carcinomas were induced in rabbit femurs by various methods. Inoculation near the periosteum after injury of the condylus medialis femoris was considered most successful. Results of 124 inoculations and 10 controls are demonstrated by angiograms, pharmakoangiograms and histologic photographs. Injury of periosteum and bone favors the taking and spreading of malignant growth.

A comparative study on the local inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities of anti-mouse anti-lymphocyte sera.

Local inflammatory reaction at the site of injection of anti-human antilymphocyte serum is a troublesome side effect. In this paper, a simple experimental model is presented for studying the local reaction caused by antilymphocyte serum. Anti-mouse antilymphocyte sera were injected intracutaneously and the intensity of the consequent oedema was estimated by the extravasation of Evans Blue dye solution given intravenously. It was found: (a) that rabbit anti-mouse anti-spleen sera produce consistently stronger local reactions than either anti-lymph node or anti-thymus sera; (b) that there is as yet no correlation between the intensity of the local reaction and the immunosuppressive (graft-protective) activity of the anti-lymphocyte serum pools tested. The possible implications of these findings are also discussed.

[Venous vascular changes in prostatic adenomyomatosis].

An important role should be attributed to the prostatic venous complex and to its pathology in the clinical aspects of prostate adenoma. This appears to be responsible for the acute retention of urine as well as for the hemorrhages that accompany the disease. The authors, on the occasion of 50 adenomectomies by the trans-vesical method, have carried out histological investigations on the excised tissues and made a correlation with the microscopic aspects of the peri-orificial urethra and of the prosthatic urethra, in connection with the changes noted in the venous system. The veins have displayed more or less important changes in all the cases. These consisted in stasis, lacunar dilatations or of the varicose type, inflammations or parietal modifications of a different origin. At the same time were noted signs of inflammation in the submucosa as well as in the muscular layer of the bladder wall, which appeared to be distrophic. The pathogenic role is stressed of the venous system in the developement of the clinical aspects especially in type II and III of a personal classification.
