DNA binding properties of a mutant T antigen from the simian virus 40-transformed human cell line simian virus 80.

We investigated whether the T antigen of the simian virus 40-transformed human cell line simian virus 80 ( SV80 ) specifically recognizes DNA sequences of its own template, i.e, the viral sequences integrated in the SV80 cellular genome. In vitro DNA binding experiments clearly indicated that, in contrast to wild-type T antigen, SV80 T antigen does not specifically bind to sites on the integrated viral DNA in SV80 cells.

The distribution of large T antigen in simian virus 40 nucleoprotein complexes.

Simian virus 40 large T antigen binds to two types of nucleoprotein complexes from lytically infected cells: those containing replicating virus DNA (100S complexes) and those containing nonreplicating virus DNA (70S complexes). Analysis by agarose gel electrophoresis showed that replicating DNA was found exclusively in 100S complexes, although these complexes also contained large amounts of form I and form II DNA. In contrast, no replicating DNA was found in 70S complexes, and pulse-labeled DNA in these complexes migrated as form I and form II DNA that presumably had recently completed replication. Immunoprecipitation and gel electrophoresis showed that large T antigen was associated with both types of complexes. From 21 to 62% of replicating DNA in 100S complexes was bound to T antigen. Our estimates indicated, however, that more than three-fourths of the DNA molecules in 100S complexes were nonreplicating and unassociated with T antigen. In 70S complexes, 12 to 31% of pulse-labeled DNA was bound to T antigen, but because there were more DNA molecules in the 70S complexes, they contained a greater absolute amount of T antigen.

Total and specific IgE (RAST) in atopic twins.

Fifty sets of twins (thirty monozygotic [MZ] and twenty dizygotic [DZ], of whom at least one twin had a history of atopy, were investigated by means of skin tests, RAST and IgE determinations. The concordance of atopies for MZ was, with 56.7%, significantly higher as compared with the DZ with 20%. The mean values of the log serum IgE level differences of MZ and DZ sets of twins was not statistically significant but the percentage distribution of the log serum IgE level differences showed a closer correlation of the IgE levels among MZ. The MZ sets do not show a better concordance in the specific reagin production, as measured by RAST or skin tests, than the DZ sets. These findings seemed to indicate that although the tendency of IgE production is genetically determined its specificity is governed mainly by environmental influences.

[Comparison of nondominant unilateral and bilateral electroconvulsive therapy--clinical efficiency and side effects (author's transl)].

UNLABELLED: In a double-blind study 100 patients were treated either with conventional ECT or with unilateral ECT. The majority suffered from depressive illness, mainly endogenous depression. On average, they were hospitalized 41 days and unsuccessfully treated with antidepressants and other psychoactive drugs before ECT was given as a last treatment resort. ECT efficiency was evaluated by: (1) clinical evaluation, (2) AMP documentation, (3) the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, and (4) the von Zerssen Mood Scale. Side effects were evaluated by a test (1) for vigilance (tachistoscopic threshold), (2) for verbal and visual memory, (3) for performance, (4) for concept formation, and (5) the Benton test. RESULTS: There was no difference in clinical efficiency between the two methods. As for side effects, unilateral ECT produced fewer organic brain syndromes and less impairment of verbal memory and performance. Total side effects were significantly less. There was no significant difference between the two methods with regard to vigilance, visual memory, and concept formation. One week after ECT, in both groups there was a significant increase in vigilance and visual memory in comparison to the results before ECT; the unilateral group also showed significant increase in verbal memory and concentration.

[Becker's nevus associated with a smooth muscle hamartoma].

A new case of Becker's nevus associated with smooth muscle hamartoma is reported. This is the third case reported in the literature. The different associations reported in the Becker's nevus give support to the mesenchymal-epithelial interactions.

[Multiple minute digitate hyperkeratosis (a paraneoplastic system?)].

A case of "Multiple Minuta and Digitata Hyperkeratosis" related to a carcinoma of the larynx is reported. The improvement of the cutaneous lesions after surgical treatment of the carcinoma suggests the possibility of considering this peculiar skin disorder as a paraneoplasic symptom.

[The biology of the warble-fly oestromyia leporina Pallas 1778 (Diptera, Hypodermatidae), a parasite of the field-mouse Microtus arvalis Pall (author's transl)].

The present paper deals with the discovery of the warble-fly Oestromyia leporina in the surrounding of Giessen. The behaviour of the flies in the field is described; in particular the behaviour of both sexes before and during mating and of the female during the oviposition period is described for the first time. The relations between host and parasite are explained as well as the development from third-instar larvae into the puparaium and then into the imago. By further experiments it is attempted to find out the factors causing the long time of ten months' quiescence in the puparium. The range of hosts is tested by natural and experimental infections' furthermore it is discussed if the present findings can be applied to other populations of the same warble-flies in far-off regions.
