Changes in agent variability and time course of disease incidence during a year (as exemplified by dysentery).

The vulnerability of epidemic process during the period of minimum annual incidence of the disease is validated. Biological properties of Shigella sonnei are studied and their variability examined using the index for evaluation of the mean number of variations for a sign. Minimum agent heterogeneity coincides with minimum incidence of disease and maximum heterogeneity with its seasonal rises.

[Stability of epidemic process in context of biological system].

A new hypothesis of formation (activation) of an epidemic process in the interseasonal and interepidemic periods at the expense of self-regulatory mechanisms associated with variations of parasitic biosystem diversity is suggested. The period of minimum intense morbidity in its multiannual and annual dynamics is shown to be the most vulnerable span of an epidemic process.

[Infectious morbidity in technogenic environmental pollution].

Technogenic environmental pollution has a marked indirect influence on the growth of infection morbidity. While comparing areas with different technogenic loads, the most significant differences in the levels of morbidity were noted in the period of minimal epidemic process intensity. This period was the most susceptible link of an epidemiological year.

[Use of nonparametric statistical criteria in epidemiological research].

The article deals with the possibility of using two nonparametric statistical methods (sign criterion, Wilkonson's paired criterion) in epidemiological investigations. Examples illustrating the use of these methods are presented and their advantages in comparison with commonly used methods are shown.

[Methodological approach to calculating average growth (increment) rates in epidemiological analysis].

In an analysis of dynamic rows with a view to the calculation of the rate of growth (increase) with the use of the geometric mean, it is expedient to utilize not the actual data, but the characteristics of the straight line aligned by the least-square method. The calculation of the average rate of growth (increase) by the actual data is recommended only in case of the monotonous change of the measured characteristic.

[Viral pollution of drinking water in industrial towns of Eastern Siberia].

The drinking water was tested for viruses in the industrial towns of Eastern Siberia. The findings suggest that extremely poor provision with good quality drinking water is seen in the town of Ust-Ilimsk where there were high levels of pathogenic viruses in the water. The high contamination of drinking water with hepatitis A virus and rotavirus is a cause of higher incidence of intestinal viral infections in the areas under study.

[Clinical and epidemiological manifestations of acute viral hepatitis in workers of chemical industry enterprises].

The paper presents epidemiological and clinical findings in patients with acute viral hepatitis A, B, or C, whose occupation is associated with the entrance of chemicals into the working area air. Patients who are not engaged in chemical industry are a control group. It has been found that adults who had adverse working conditions show an intensified epidemic process of acute viral hepatitis and a more aggravated infectious process. It is necessary to regard workers at chemical industrial enterprises as a risk group who will have more severe acute viral hepatitis of different etiology.

[Characteristics of acute respiratory viral infections in children under conditions of technogenic environmental pollution].

The results of observations on children with acute virus respiratory infections (ARVI) and who had long been residents of zones with different levels of technogenic pollution of the atmospheric air are presented. The technogenic pollution of the environment has been found to exert influence on the spread and clinical course of ARVI in children, this influence being the more pronounced, the higher is the level of xenobiotics in the atmospheric air. The severity of the disease is noted to depend on the development of a number of syndromes, aggravating the course of ARVI, such as the neurotoxic and bronchoobstructive syndromes. Bronchical and ENT lesions are the most frequent complication of the main disease. The child population residing under the conditions of high technogenic environmental pollution should be regarded as a group of risk subject to the aggravated course of ARVI, and the examination of sick children should be made with due regard to this circumstance.

[Infectious diseases in children living under conditions of technology-related pollution of atmospheric air].

Epidemiological and clinical studies in children with acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) and viral hepatitis A (HVA), living in zones with different levels of technogenic pollution of the atmosphere, showed that the incidence and clinical course of viral infections in children depended on the technogenic pollution of the environment, this effect being the more pronounced, the higher the level of xenobiotics in the air. Children living under conditions of high technogenic pollution of the environment should be regarded as a group at risk of more severe ARVI and HVA with complications.

[Diversity within a population of Shigella sonnei according to markers of medicinal preparations].

As revealed in this study, S. sonnei population is represented by two clusters with respect to the sensitivity to different antibiotics. A higher degree of diversity was observed with respect to the action of streptomycin, kefzol, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and kanamycin in comparison with the action of gentamicin, nevigramon, rafampicin, tetracycline and polymyxin. The level of diversity of S. sonnei with respect to the sensitivity to antibiotics under study underwent essential changes during the calendar year. The distributions obtained study quite closely corresponded to changes in Sonne dysentery morbidity observed within the year period: the first cluster corresponded to the period of morbidity between the seasons and the second one, to the seasonal period of morbidity. The minimal coefficient of diversity fell on May while the maximum--on September. The minimal level of S. sonnei diversity, as a rule, corresponds to the minimum biosystems stability.

[Indications of pathogenic viruses in water of Lake Baikal and its tributaries].

The waters of 25 large rivers falling into the Baikal Lake, their mouth water areas and open Baikal Lake areas to a depth of 500 m were for the first time in the practice of researches on the Baikal Lake were investigated for markers of hepatitis A virus and rotaviruses. The investigations showed an insignificant contamination of surface waters with pathogenic viruses. The antigens of all studied viruses and high values of bacteria from the Escherichia coli group were recorded in the areas exposed to chronic man-made pollution. Data on the seasonal changes in the distribution of enteroviruses indicated their absence in the annual cycle in the pelagic area of the lake, which suggests that viral particle would not accumulate under the conditions of the Baikal Lake over a long period.

[Acute intestinal infections in children in areas with industrial environmental air pollution].

Acute intestinal infections were clinically and epidemiologically studied in children residing in the towns with different quantitative and qualitative composition of ambient air pollutants and in the districts of a town, which differ in the level of technogenic ambient air pollution. Six hundred and eighty patients with different types of shigellosis and 421 patients with salmonellosis admitted to the infection hospitals of the towns of Angarsk (an intensively polluted locality) and Irkutsk (a better ecological area) were examined in 1995 to 2000. The technogenic ambient air pollution was found to exert a noticeable impact on the incidence with S. sonnei dysentery. In poor environmental areas, all the infections under study are characterized by a great burden, duration, more severe clinical symptoms, and poor laboratory changes in the presence of a decreased responsiveness.

[Problems of epidemic safety of drinking water use by the population of Russia].

Quantitative relationships were studied between the indicators (common coliform bacteria (CCP), glucose-positive bacteria (GPB), thermoduric bacteria (TDB), coliform bacteria, enterococci, clostridia, coliphages) and the opportunistic (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Klebsiella) and pathogenetic (Salmonella and intestinal viruses) microorganisms at the stages of effluent purification and decontamination, in processes of self-purification in the water reservoirs and of water preparation at water-supplying stations, as well as in the association with the incidence of acute intestinal infections of bacterial and viral genesis in different climatic zones of the country. Salmonella and the opportunistic bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were found to be highly resistant to detoxifying agents and environmental factors, adaptable, able to reproduce in pure water, to long survive in underground waters, and to accumulate when water is desalinated at the erections. The cases of intestinal infections were found in the population using the portable water of the standard quality in terms of E. coli, TDB, CCB, and enterococci. In this case only the wider integral index of GPB, which includes the indices of E. coli, TDB, CCB, as well as lactose-negative pathogenic and opportunistic species retains its sanitary significance in terms of all signs and is a reliable indicator of the potential epidemic hazard of drinking water use. Long-term studies have provided evidence for the sanitary value of coliphages as indicators of viral drinking water contamination.
