White male Wistar rats exposed a single time for 120 minutes to the action of an electric field of 100 kV/m and 50 Hz present a very important increase of the plasma concentration of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). In the case of a 360-minute exposure a 30 per cent reduction of the diuresis as compared with the control takes concomitantly place.

The influence of magnetic fields of moderate intensities (50 and 120 Oe) was studied in rats after single or repeated exposures with or without a rise in environmental temperature. The following parameters were investigated: the number of erythrocytes and leucocytes, the percentage of different varieties of leucocytes, serum Na+ and K+, plasma corticosterone, ascorbic acid in adrenals, blood catecholamines, plasma fibrinolytic activity, plasma antidiuretic hormone. The resistance to hyperthermia was tested after single exposures to magnetic fields and the survival time was measured. The only significant change recorded in the number of blood cells was a leucopenia after single exposures to 50 Oe for 4 hrs. The parameters indicating the activity of the adrenal cortex were not altered significantly. A moderate rise in blood noradrenaline suggested a possible mild stimulation of the adrenergic system. The plasma fibrinolytic activity was significantly stimulated after single exposures, but no change in fibrinolysis could be recorded after repeated exposures to magnetic fields. Changes observed in plasma ADH were not conclusive. The resistance of animals to hyperthermia - as a general test of reactivity - showed minimal changes in the survival time, loss of weight, and rectal temperature in animals exposed to hyperthermia (40 degrees C) under the influence of the magnetic fields.

The authors conducted complex investigations in the domain of the intermediary metabolism under experimental conditions on 24 dogs grouped into three lots: lot A, twelve dogs, exposed for six months to the action of continuous light; lot B, six dogs, maintained in darkness; lot C, six dogs, maintained for the same period in the animal house, getting the same food as the other two lots, which are the control lot. We determined some biochemical, hematological, enzymatical parameters, before the beginning of the experiment, and after 24 hours, 48 hours, 7, 14 and 21 days, one, two, three, six months. Then the animals were sacrificed, and fragments from the aorta, coronary vessels, myocardium, brain, adrenals, pancreas and liver were examined both on the optical and on the electronic microscope and we analysed some fats from the vascular tissues. The net decrease of proteinemia with lot A was registered, concomitantly with a net decrease of serumalbumins, of the alpha 1-globulins and of the gamma-globulins, and with a rise of the alpha 2- and beta-globulins. The values of glycemia increased with lot A, and less with lot B. The thrombocytes decreased obviously with lot A, and less with lot B. GPT decreased with lot A, and GOT increased. The serum Zn decreased slowly with lot A, and more irregularly but more obviously with lot B. The serum Cu increased with lot A, and decreased with lot B. Alterations on the level of arterioles from the brain, aorta, myocardium and pancreas were evidenced, as well as electronmicroscopical alterations of the arteriolar walls and of the cellular organelles. The lipids from the brain, aorta and myocardium increased with both of the experimental lots and so did the cerebrosides, lecithins and the sphyngomyelin.

Investigations effected in 16 subjects of 20-69 years at bed rest after bone fractures demonstrated, in an interval of 10-27 days after surgery, normal plasma sodium concentration and a decreased urinary elimination, an increased plasma potassium concentration but a decreased urinary output. The osmotic changes were not significant. The plasma vasopressin activity was increased. Three urinary aldosterone determinations showed an increased output. The serum calcium level was within normal limits but its urinary output was initially slightly decreased, contrary to its augmented elimination after simple voluntary bed rest, as results from literature. The hydroxyproline elimination was increased, demonstrating an active collagen metabolism.
