Candida albicans blastoconidia in peripheral blood smears from non-neutropenic surgical patients.

An 80 year old woman developed fever 11 days after volvulus surgery. A peripheral blood smear showed numerous yeast cells--both extraleucocytic and intraleucocytic--as well as leucoagglutination. The fungal elements included blastospores, pseudohyphae, and germ tubes. Two days later, blood cultures yielded Candida albicans, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Staphlococcus aureus. The patient had no medical history of immunodeficiency. Several reports indicate that fungal elements may be detected in peripheral blood smears from patients who have a severe intestinal disease.

Colonic obstruction and perforation related to heavy Trichuris trichiura infestation.

Heavy Trichuris trichiura infestation is rare in developed countries, and complications requiring surgical intervention have been described rarely in human trichuriasis. A case of colonic obstruction and perforation related to heavy whip-worm infection is described in an 84 year old woman. The woman was admitted to hospital because of a chest infection. Two days after admission she suffered nausea and vomiting followed a day later by bowel stoppage. Laparotomy indicated intestinal obstruction by a tumour. A partial right sided ileocolectomy was performed. Pathological examination of the resected bowel revealed heavy infestation with T trichiura causing a pseudotumour following a proliferative inflammatory response.

Diagnosis of systemic candidiasis: application of co-counterimmunoelectrophoresis.

The accuracy of co-counterimmunoelectrophoresis was compared with mycological and clinical data for different groups of inpatients. The specificity and sensitivity of this method ranged from 100 to 69%. The co-specific precipitin line was observed during systemic infections caused by most opportunistic Candida species. The variations in the line in successive serum samples provided a simple means of serological surveillance. The test also detected seroconversion. The gradual disappearance of the line reflected a favourable prognosis, whereas its abrupt disappearance indicated unfavourable prognosis and correlated with the appearance of detectable circulating antigens.

Parasitic adaptation of pathogenic fungi to mammalian hosts.

Pathogenic fungi involved in medical and veterinary mycology can be classified in three different groups according to their level of adaptation to parasitism. Only a few species belonging to dermatophytes can be considered genuine parasites as opposed to molds or fungi involved in systemic mycoses. Ecological, ethological, biochemical, and immunological factors can play a role in preadaptation or adaptation to parasitic life and are discussed.

[Opportunistic pneumopathy caused by Torulopsis glabrata].

Yeasts are taking a growing place in the development of opportunistic pneumonias in a hospital environment. We report a case of pneumonia due to Torulopsis glabrata in a patient of 58 years in complete remission from a malignant oesophageal tumour after surgery and radiotherapy, and not given immunosuppressive treatment.

[Parasitologic study of feces: simultaneous performance of Faust's, Janecko-Urbanyi's and Ritchie's concentration technics].

The authors propose the simultaneous use of Faust's, Janeckso-Urbanyi's and Ritchie's techniques according to a protocol which combines the effectiveness of the three techniques, with a saving in reagents, a significant simplification of the manipulations (a single dilution of the stools, a single straining and a total of three centrifugations) and the possibility of conducting valid comparative studies, as the three techniques are performed from the same faecal aqueous suspension.

[Changes of serum lipoproteins during the course of human malaria (author's transl)].

Triacylglycerides (TAG), total cholesterol (TC) and serum lipoproteins (SLP) were studied during the course of 12 cases of human malaria and one case of simian inui malaria. The erythrocytic schizogony induced quickly an increase of TAG, a decrease of TC and modifications of SLP such an increase of VLDL parallel with a decrease or a disappearance of HDL. These modifications, always clear-cut, were not correlated with the intensity of parasitaemia or the species of Plasmodium. They were transient but longer than those described in connection with experimental rodent malaria. The changes of HDL could be associated with defective triglyceride removal of the plasma compartment due to an inhibition of the lipoprotein lipase induced by the parasite.
