[The intermediate uveitis with systemic symptoms: a case report].

The case of 26-year old male patient with typical clinical intermediate uveitis (vitritis, periphlebitis) with accompanying leucopenia, bradycardia and demyelination focal areas in brain of unknown etiology is presented. The asymptomatic periphlebitis was also found in the eyes of his twin brothers (30 years old) and sister (20 years old).

[Morphological characteristics of epithelial cell line from rat cornea].

PURPOSE: Morphological characteristics of established cell line (RtCE) derived from rat anterior corneal epithelium. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Morphology of cultured RtCE cells was evaluated by light and electron microscopy. Anterior corneal epithelium of rat served as control. RESULTS: Both in light and electron microscope we observed morphological similarity with anterior corneal epithelium (several layers of cells, numerous desmosomal connections). Moreover, similar morphological changes were observed in relation to the control material, i.e. degeneration and flattening of cells in superficial layers. CONCLUSIONS: The morphological analysis of RtCE cell line proves its usefulness for further cytomorphological, cytogenetical and functional analyses, as well as for evaluation of influence of different physico-chemical and biological factors on growth and regeneration of corneal epithelium in vitro.

[Late ophthalmoscopic changes in patients after malignant hypertension].

AIM: Comparison of eye fundus changes in patients in whom malignant hypertension was diagnosed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 14 patients (6 F, 8 M) aged 24-54 years were examined. In all cases kidney disease was the cause of arterial hypertension. 11 patients underwent kidney transplantation (0.5-20 years before the study), 2 patients was hemodialysed, 1 received only pharmacological treatment. RESULTS: During the first examination in two patients IV grade of hypertensive retinopathy (K-W classification) was found, in the rest of the patients I/II or II grade with typical changes for malignant hypertension in the past (Elschnig's spots) was found. In control examinations (6 months-21 years) the persistence of the previously noticed changes was observed.

[Ocular manifestations of the HELLP syndrome].

A 23-year old female patient diagnosed as HELLP syndrome (H-hemolysis, EL-elevated liver enzymes, LP-low platelets) was admitted during her 34th week of first pregnancy. After caesarean section she received hypotensive and anticoagulant treatment and blood transfusion. Her general condition was improved. The ocular manifestations (i.e. blurred vision, retinal oedema nad hemorrhages) were seen on the 10th postpartum day in both eyes. The ocular changes disappeared 4 month later.

[Acute posterior multifocal placoid epitheliopathy].

The authors present 2 cases (women aged 33 and 51) of APMPE with typical ophthalmoscopic and angiographic picture. The disease began with acute decrease of visual acuity. During 6 months follow-up there was no progression of the changes.

[Bilateral Purtscher's syndrome].

Purtscher's syndrome (traumatic retinal angiopathy, posttraumatic retinopathy) belongs to rare posttraumatic retinopathies. The authors present a case of a bilateral occurrence of this syndrome after a head injury connected with pancreatitis. A 6-months long observation of the patient showed an improvement of the visual acuity from counting fingers to 0.1 and receding of the inflammatory-oedematous changes at the eye fundus; there remained a pallor of the temporal side of the optic discs.

[Oral acyclovir treatment of viral eye infections].

Forty four patients with virus conjunctivitis, keratitis, uveitis and retinitis were treated by acyclovir in tablets--5 times a day 400 mg.; the results were satisfactory. The drug was well tolerated and it could be used also in patients who showed hypersensitivity for acyclovir after ++intra-conjunctival application in the form of ointment.

[Temporal arteritis].

Presented is a case of a 74 years old patient whose ailment was diagnosed as Horton's disease (temporal arteritis) on the basis of general clinical symptoms (constant headache, sclerosis of the temporal artery, anorexia and sleeplessness) and ocular signs (poor visual acuity and pale papilloedema).

[Evaluation of binocular vision and eye muscle balance in patients with diabetes].

The studies comprised 41 patients, aged 18-67, with type I and II diabetes. The function of ocular muscles was evaluated basing on the examination of eye movements, muscles balance and binocular vision. In 6 patients, binocular vision and in 31 ocular muscles balance were disturbed. No relationship was found between the function of eye muscles and the age of patients, duration of diabetes and changes in the fundus of the eye.

[Xeroderma pigmentosum--case report].

The authors presented a case of a boy aged 16, in whom xeroderma pigmentosus was diagnosed 6 years earlier. The boy was referred to the clinic on account of a quickly growing tumor of conjunctiva and cornea of his right eye. During 2-year follow-up, in spite of two surgical excision, the tumor relapsed and finally enucleation of the eyeball was performed. Histopathological examination revealed melanoma malignum. The clinical aspects of prophylaxis, early diagnosis and treatment of xeroderma pigmentosum are discussed.

[Angioid streaks--case report].

A case of a 46-year-old, generally healthy man, with sudden deterioration of visual acuity associated with macular haemorrhagies is presented. Angioid streaks were diagnosed basing on the ophthalmoscopical and angiographic picture of the fundus.
