[The use of minipigs to produce diagnostic sera for the serological identification of bacteria in the genus Morganella].

Mini-pigs of the Svetlogorsk breed were immunized with vaccine prepared from of M. morganii culture; the culture had been grown in a liquid nutrient medium, obtained from casein hydrolysate, in flasks placed in a thermostatically controlled shaker to the phases of exponential growth and cell growth deceleration. O-agglutinating sera thus obtained were specific. The highest antibody level was detected in the serum obtained as the result of the immunization of guinea pigs with the vaccine prepared from the culture on the phase of exponential growth. This serum retained its properties after storage for 9 months. Heterologous antibodies occurred in the sera under study not more frequently than in rabbit sera and practically in the same titers.

[Microflora of the nasal mucosa in allergic perennial and infectious rhinitis].

The microbiological study of 69 patients with allergic annual rhinitis (AAR) and infectious rhinitis (IR) was carried out. In AAR the isolated representatives of 15 genera and 40 species were distributed in 2 to 7 component; in IR the isolated representatives of 16 genera and 25 species were grouped in 2 to 4-component associations. In AAR Staphylococcus aureus was found to belong to the main species and in IR, S. aureus and S. epidermidis, while the number of species regarded as occasional in AAR was 7 (S. auricularis, S. cohnii, S. hominis, S. haemolyticus, S. warneri, S. apitis, S. schleiferi). Differences in the distribution of Neisseria, nonfermenting Gram negative bacteria, Streptococcus in associations in cases of AAR and IR were established. In AAR Corynebacterium pseudodiphthericum and in IR C. pseudotuberculosis were the dominant species.

[Properties of the isolated Bacillus subtilis strains and their influence on the intestinal microflora of experimental mice].

The cultural, physiologo-biochemical adhesive and antagonistic properties of B. subtilis strains with good prospects for use as biotherapeutic preparations were studied. For further studies B. subtilis strain No. 1719 was chosen. In experiments on non-inbred white mice the animals were treated by the preparation Cifran used for their selective decontamination from opportunistic microflora and for the creation of the state of dysbiosis. The influence of the spore-forming microbe on the parietal microflora of the large intestine of the animals was shown. Reliable data on the changes in the number of microorganisms (CFU/ml) per 1 cm of the surface of the large intestine were established. As markers making it possible to evaluate the action of biotherapeutic and other medicinal remedies, easily determinable ratios of lac+/lac- of bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus/Staphylococcus spp. was proposed.

[Comparative characterization of the microflora of the upper respiratory tract mucous membranes in bronchial asthma and allergic persistent rhinitis].

A total of 250 patients with diagnosed bronchial asthma (BA) were examined by microbiological methods. Among them--188 children and 62 adults. In 87 patients the microflora of nasal mucosa was studied, in 40--of pharynx only and in 123 patients--both the nasal and the pharynx. For comparative analysis earlier data obtained in 69 patients with persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR) were used. The cultures isolated from the nasal mucosa of BA patients were shown to number 18 genera and 42 species, while among those isolated from pharynx mucosa 20 genera and 40 species. Monocultures were isolated from the nasal mucosa only in 23% of the examined patients and from the pharynx mucosa--only in 1.42%. Associations with different numbers of components were isolated from nasal and pharynx mucosa (2 to 6, 2 to 8 respectively). Staphylococcus aureus was regarded as the main species of nasal biocenosis in BA and PAR, as well as pharynx biocenosis in BA. Besides, in BA other Staphylococcus species (schleiferi, caprae, capitis, hominis, etc.), reversely related to the main species, could be isolated from both mucous membranes. Similarities and differences in microflora of biocenoses in both nosological forms, confirming links between PAR and BA, are considered.

[The characteristics of the intestinal Escherichia microflora in patients with acute intestinal infections].

The content of enterobacteria in fecal samples obtained from 1,146 patients with acute enteric infections was studied. In the first days of the disease about 70% of the patients were found to have abundant and highly diversified intestinal microflora with Escherichia contamination of feces constituting 10(6)-10(7) microbial cells/g in children and 10(7)-10(8) microbial cells/g in adults. The number of patients excreting Escherichia and pathogenic enterobacteria increased from 8.8% (children under 6 months) to 28.6% (adults), the number of patients excreting Escherichia and opportunistic enterobacteria decreased from 69.1% (children under 6 months) to 36.8%. In 75% of cases the reverse relationship between the number of Escherichia and opportunistic enterobacteria was registered, the latter numbering two and more genera in 50% of cases. The serological picture of Escherichia was poorer when they were isolated simultaneously with shigellae (83 O-groups) than in those cases when Escherichia alone were isolated (108 O-groups), or when Escherichia were isolated simultaneously with opportunistic enterobacteria (119 O-groups).

[The need for revision of the bacteriological criteria of the etiological significance of diarrheogenic Escherichia strains in the diagnosis of acute intestinal infections].

Different E. coli of 0-groups, enteropathogenic (EPEC), enteroinvasive, enterotoxigenic (ETEC) and diarrheogenic in sporadic child diarrhea (DESCD), regarded as the causative agents of enteric infections, were detected in 70-80% of cases (1,146 E.coli carriers) in the feces of child and adult patients with acute enteric infections (AEI) irrespective of their age; in 35% of cases the same patient had a combination of two or more varieties of EPEC, ETEC or DESCD. Only EPE were excreted by 3.5-11.3% of patients, depending on their age; only ETEC were excreted by 1.7-3.4% of patients and only DESCD, by 23.1-32.8%. In 30-40% of cases diarrheogenic E.coli of the corresponding 0-groups were isolated as monocultures. The complex of bacteriological criteria, serving as the basis for the diagnostics of AEI (the necessity of the quantitative and qualitative characterization of the contamination of the seed material, E.coli serological labeling, the determination of E.coli pathogenicity factors) is discussed.
