The preoperative holding area of the past was a waiting area for patients before surgery. Today it has evolved into a specialty area that is staffed by perianesthesia nurses who provide nursing assessment, monitoring, teaching, and emotional support to patients in a fast-paced environment. This area of specialized nursing holds many opportunities for perianesthesia nurses to further develop their practice and achieve significant contributions to successful outcomes for both patients and their families.
Endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair is a new, less-invasive approach to traditional AAA repair. This innovative technique may provide the patient with significant benefits, including a less-invasive procedure, fewer postoperative complications, and early discharge home. In many cases, the patient will be transferred after the procedure to the PACU and then discharged to the general floor or telemetry unit, eliminating the need for an ICU stay.
Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and pseudocyclic INAA (PCINAA) have been used to determine the selenium content of a variety of Canadian food items. Use of the 162-keV gamma ray of short-lived 77mSe in INAA allowed relatively simple and rapid determinations and was suitable for many of the foods. PCINAA was found to give lower detection limits and was used for the low-selenium food samples. Both internal and external quality assessments were used to evaluate and assure the accuracy and precision of the methods developed.
