The effect of a surface disinfectant on a dental cast.

This study determined the effect of a disinfectant solution on dental casts. Stone samples were immersed in a disinfectant solution and in control solutions. The results indicate that a saturated calcium sulfate (clear slurry) solution with 0.525% sodium hypochlorite was an effective disinfectant and acted without damage to the dental cast.

The airborne pollens of Walla Walla, Washington.

A Pollen Survey: During the pollen seasons of 1975 and 1976 a total of 821 pollen samples were collected with a Rotorod sampler in and near Walla Walla, Washington. A total of 51 genera in 22 families were identified; most were also determined to species. A pollen chart was constructed to show the duration of pollen production of each taxon.

Blood loss and hypotensive anesthesia in oral-facial corrective surgery.

To evaluate accurately changes in blood volume during oral-facial corrective surgery, double-tagged radioisotope blood volume studies were performed preoperatively and postoperatively. Unexpectedly large RCV deficits that were not consistent with EBL were observed in studies conducted at two separate facilities. Hypotensive general anesthesia was used for the intended purpose of reducing blood loss in oral-facial corrective surgery. Various physiological parameters were measured preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively to evaluate patient response to this anesthetic method. The MAP was reduced from 89.94 +/- 2.13 to 72.79 +/- 1.63 mm Hg under the influence of NaN infusion supplemented with halothane. No dose-response relationship existed between NaN and the intraoperative MAP. A 44% reduction in the measured red cell volume was observed in comparison to a previously studied group of patients who underwent similar surgical procedures under normotensive anesthesia. It is concluded from an extensive review of the literature that the most vulnerable period for serious complications is in the immediate postoperative period. No significant complications or adverse effects were observed in this study. It cannot be emphasized too strongly that the safety of this hypotensive technique lies in constant and careful monitoring of the patient and meticulous attention to all details of anesthetic management.

An IMV setup without a compressed air source.

Intermittent mandatory ventilation (IMV), as described in the literature, utilizes an air-oxygen blender and a compressed air source. When older ventilators are used and in locations in which compressed air sources are unavailable, other arrangements must be made if IMV is to be used. An arrangement is described in which a bird Mark 7 respirator, after the removal of its pneumatic clutch, is inserted into the IMV assembly. Such an arrangement produces wide FIO2 ranges and high flows and obviates the need for an oxygen blender and compressed air source. If a compressed air source is available or if a bird Mark 7 respirator is not available for use, othe arrangements may be more satisfactory.
