It is stated that if adequate qualitative and quantitative knowledge of tumor development is to be gained, a systems approach must be used, in which a given process is considered as representing the sum total of hierarchically organized and interrelated parts, and that quantitative data on processes of tumor development are needed for cognitive, diagnostic, evaluative, and prognostic purposes.
The literature review reports data on morphology, biological role and mechanisms of apoptosis as a special type of cell destruction. Apoptosis is very common in humans and animals in health and disease, and therefore needs further investigation.

Results of histologic and electron microscopic study of rectum cancer before and after radiation therapy are presented. A peculiar form of cancer cell death--apoptosis--was observed in all the tumours. The differences between necrosis and apoptosis are indicated, feasible mechanisms of cell death are considered. The justification of a further investigation of apoptosis is given.
The review is presented in which a great importance of methodology in scientific and practical work of the pathologist is shown. The contents of the notion "methodology" and its levels, methodological developments on the examples from pathological anatomy and its interconnection with other sciences are outlined.

The authors described clinicomorphological correlations in the evaluation of the efficacy of preoperative radiotherapy combined with metronidazole (MZ) in laryngeal cancer patients. A study was made of the tumors from 61 laryngeal cancer patients following radiation exposure at a summary dose of 20 and 32 Gy with and without MZ. Histological change of a tumor confirmed a radiosensitizing effect of MZ. However the MZ effect was not equally noticeable in tumor central and peripheral parts. Microscopic foci of the affected epithelium of the larynx and gland mucosa, muscular cells and vessels were revealed. MZ produces a stimulating effect on collagen production by fibroblasts.
An apparatus is proposed for the stereological analysis in medicine and biology. Its basic parts are as follows: a television microscope, video-control monitor with a morphometrical net, blocks of accumulation and original information processing.
The paper is concerned with the results of a study of 250 patients with laryngeal cancer who received a radical course of radiation therapy. The 1st stage of the disease was diagnosed in 15 (6%) patients, the 2nd stage in 47 (18.8%), the 3rd in 178 (71.2%) and the 4th in 10 (4%) patients. gamma-Beam therapy was given to 158 patients, electron therapy to 60, and electron therapy combined with 5-fluorouracil to 32 patients with stages III--IV. The patients were irradiated on a B-5M-25 betatron and gamma-units of the rokus type. A single focal dose was 3 Gy, the summary dose in most of the cases 60-70 Gy (TDF 99-115 units). Therapeutic results were evaluated by the degree of tumor regression, frequency of recurrence and the survival of patients without evidence of disease. The short-term results for all types of treatment were almost the same. However in cancer of stages I--II a complete tumor resorption was noted more frequently than in tumors of stages III--IV (respectively 81 and 36%). Differences in the frequency of a complete tumor regression also depended on its site. It was observed in 62% of the patients with the supraligamentous tumor site, in 93% with the ligamentous site and in 45% with the supraligamentous-ligamentous site. A study of the long-term results of the treatment of patients with laryngeal cancer has shown that a 5-year disease-free survival with good organ function is noted in 81% of the patients with stages I--II and only in 28% with stages III--IV. The results do not depend on the method of irradiation.
Histological and immunohistochemical examination of the tumorous tissue from 45 breast cancer patients after surgery (14) and combined treatment (31) was performed. Using direct Coons method the localization of immune complexes and immunoglobulins of the main classes (G, A, M) was revealed. Deposits of immune complexes including immunoglobulins of different classes were found in 8 patients of the 1st group and 22 patients of the 2nd group. Immune complexes were mostly localized extracellularly in the stroma. After irradiation extensive deposit and more intense fluorescence of immune complexes in the stroma of a tumor, lumpy in the walls of the major vessels were observed. In the tumor parenchyma of breast cancer patients before irradiation, immune complexes were found on the cytolemmas of cancer cells and on the surface of cancer complexes, after irradiation on the preserved cancer complexes in the form of small foci. It is assumed that immune complexes and immunoglobulins of different classes related to breast cancer epithelial cells, block the immunological interaction of T lymphocytes with cancer cells. The suppression effect of radiotherapy on tumor cell receptor activity has been shown that is not only of theoretical but also of practical interest.

The ultrastructure of blood and lymph capillaries of rectal adenocarcinoma was studied before and after pre-operation radiation therapy. The walls of blood capillaries of the tumor were formed by endothelial cells, basal membrane, and pericytes, while those of lymph capillaries by endothelial cells alone. After irradiation of the tumor at a dose of 20 Gr the total architechtonics of the vessel wall of blood and lymph capillaries was retained, but the lumen of many capillaries became smaller, and connections between endotheliocytes weaker. Radiation changes of endothelial cells of the vessels of both types are similar and manifest as swelling, vacuolation of organelles of the cytoplasm, accumulation of lipid drops, distention of tubules and cisterns.
Cyto-histological correlations in cases of chemodectomas of the neck were made. The patients were divided into 3 groups; with benign (8), malignized (8) and malignant (14 tumors). Decreased vascular component, solidization, marked cellular and nuclear polymorphism taken together are signs of morphological malignizaiton of the tumor. In most patients, however, no relationship between morphological characteristics of chemodectomas and their clinical course was established. Clinico-morphological correlations indicate that cellular and tissue changes are not the only signs of malignancy of a tumor.
