Blood group testing has achieved wide acceptance by the courts as a major scientific determinant in paternity proceedings. Other tests, including H-LA types and hemoglobin determinations, are also being used with increasing frequency; however, there are legal safeguards which must be met to satisfy the court's need to ensure the validity of the tests and their interpretation. In order for the results of paternity testing to be admitted into testimony (evidence) the following should be established: 1) proof that proper persons provided the blood samples; 2) consent to the tests and permission for release of information regarding test results; 3) proof that the speciment was correctly labeled and transported; 4) documented accuracy of the testing procedures; 5) fact testimony regarding the test results; and 6) expert testimony explaining the exclusion principle. In the future, laboratory personnel can expect wider application of these and other laboratory results to legal proceedings. For determinations derived from any laboratory testing to be admissable as evidence, the courts will apply the above safeguards.
Gastric emptying time may be of investigative value and evidentiary significance in estimating the time of death. However, in order to express an expert opinion with a degree of certainty, the time, volume, and character of the last meal must be known, and other factors considered. The maximum normal emptying time for the healthy intact stomach is 6 h. Factors accelerating or delaying gastric emptying include fear and apprehension, acute and chronic diseases, trauma, drugs, and the stomach that has undergone surgery. Recognition of these influences supports the conclusions that the forensic pathologist draws regarding the interval between the last meal and death.
Open perineal cryosurgical prostatectomy has been reported previously in 154 consecutive prostatic cancer patients at our center. In 37 of these patients post-cryosurgery biopsies of the prostate were obtained. In the present report we compare this tissue to the preoperative biopsies. The data suggest that well differentiated cancers are associated with advantageous survival in cryosurgery patients. Lymphoid and eosinophilic cell infiltrates may represent post-cryosurgical local immune responses, with improved survival. Estrogen therapy seems to suppress this local immune response. One month or more after cryosurgery cancer in the biopsy correlates with palpable local recurrence but prior to 1 month it does not correlate. Cryosurgery by the open perineal approach has been an effective method to eliminate the primary lesion in localized and extensive prostatic cancer.
A case report of malignant external otitis is presented with particular emphasis on the neuropathological sequelae. The most striking finding was a mycotic aneurysm of the basilar artery with resultant thrombosis and brain stem infarction. Diffuse pachymeningitis was also present. The severity of the changes described in this case further point out the need for early recognition and adequate treatment of this potentially fatal disease complex.

Lethal midline granuloma is a non-specific clinical term used for different pathological entities often exhibiting some semblance to each other as they lie along a histological spectrum. Nevertheless, each entity has a specific diagnostic pattern. The histological picture with distinguishing features of each specific type is pointed out. Stress is made on the use of repeated biopsy until the specific histological diagnosis can be made so that specific treatment as breifly outlined, can be carried out to insure the best prognosis.
Two cases of thymoma, one epiithelial and one seminoma type are presented. In both instances, the thymoma infiltrated and later perforated the gastrointestinal tract by direct extension. One is the 30th reported case of thymoma with extrathoracic metastasis; this patient had metastasis to the bone marrow and kidney. Neither patient had myasthenia gravis associated with the thymic tumor.

A case of leiomyoma of the vesicovaginal septum causing acute urinary retention and an unusual radiographic filling defect in the flood of the bladder is presented. This is a rare lesion which can be the source of confusion. It has similar microscopic appearance to lesions which the patient had previously in the esophagus and stomach, left labia, and the uterus. Microscopically, all of the tumors were benign.
Data on the incidence of cancer of the oesophagus in the Transkei for years 1965-69 are presented, age specific rates for the sexes discussed and the spatial relationship of well-defined regions of the high and low incidence demonstrated.
Clinical, angiographic, scintigraphic and pathologic observations in myocardial contusion were correlated. Radionuclide imaging of the injured heart with 99mTc-Sn-polyphosphate provides an accurate diagnosis in acute, even mild, myocardial contusion. The study can be carried out without danger to the critically ill patient. The coronary angiographic findings in this study explain what is occurring pathologically in the heart. Since arteriography is a more invasive technique than radionuclide imaging, its use is recommended only when the image is negative if it is neccessary to establish the clinical diagnosis for treatment or when more than one week has elapsed since the injury.
